Seventh Inning Rally Sends Sky Sox to Win
July 3, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Baseball Club News Release
Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Oklahoma City RedHawks could not hang on to a late lead in a 7-5 loss Wednesday night at Security Service Field.
Once down 3-0, the RedHawks entered the bottom of the seventh with a 5-3 lead. The Sky Sox put runners at the corners to start the inning before Rafael Ynoa hit into a double play. Although a run scored to make it 5-4, it also resulted in the bases being empty with two outs.
Ben Paulsen and Kyle Parker then each followed with singles against Alex White (1-1). Patrick Urckfitz entered the game to face Tim Wheeler, and Urckfitz walked Wheeler after being ahead in the count 0-2.
With the bases loaded and two outs, the RedHawks made another pitching change and brought in Jorge De Leon to face Angelys Nina. Nina sent a line drive to left field over the head of Preston Tucker to score all three runs and give Colorado Springs a 7-5 lead.
The RedHawks (45-42) put the first two runners of the eighth inning on base, but Leuris Gomez (1-1) retired each of the next three batters to keep the RedHawks off the board.
Rehabbing Colorado Rockies reliever Boone Logan worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth inning to close out the game and earn the save.
The RedHawks have dropped six of their last seven road games. Three times during that stretch they've led in the seventh inning or later, only to lose. It's also the fourth time in the past 10 road games they've lost when leading in the seventh or later.
Paired with another win by the Iowa Cubs, the RedHawks now stand three games out of first place-the farthest they've been out of first place this season.
The Sky Sox (37-49) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Drew Garcia delivered a two-out RBI triple, extending his hitting streak to 15 games.
Colorado Springs threatened to add to the lead in the third inning, loading the bases with two outs. RedHawks pitcher Mike Foltynewicz was able to get out of the jam by striking out Nina to end the inning.
The Sky Sox would score twice more in fourth inning. With runners at second and third and two outs, Ynoa sent a ground ball to Marc Krauss at first base. Krauss could not handle it, and his error allowed both runners to score and make it 3-0.
The RedHawks were able to even things up the in sixth. After Robbie Grossman and Jonathan Villar drew walks to start the inning, Krauss followed with a tape-measure blast out to right field to tie the game.
In his first game back with the RedHawks, Villar put Oklahoma City in the lead for the first time with a two-run single in seventh, making it 5-3.
Although he was in line for a win, Foltynewicz would end up with a no decision. After struggling through his past three starts, Foltynewicz was able to get back in the right direction Wednesday night. He allowed three runs-but just one earned-and eight hits over six innings with five strikeouts and one walk.
The RedHawks finish out their series in Colorado Springs looking for a split in the series at 8:05 p.m. Central time Thursday night. Live coverage begins at 7:35 p.m. on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com, or through the free iHeartRadio mobile app.
