Nina, Sky Sox Complete Comeback, Beat RedHawks, 7-5
July 3, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
If at first you don't succeed, try again.
That's exactly what Angelys Nina did in his fourth and final at-bat of the game and it paid dividends for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (37-49) in their 7-5 comeback win against the Oklahoma City RedHawks (45-42) on Wednesday night.
After striking out with two outs and the bases loaded in the third inning, Nina got the same opportunity again in the seventh inning. This time, trailing 5-4, Nina lined a 2-1 pitch from RHP Alex White (1-1) with the bases loaded and two outs over the head of left fielder Preston Tucker to clear the bases, giving the Sky Sox the winning run.
Behind a strong rehab start from LHP Brett Anderson, the Sky Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings thanks to an RBI-triple from Drew Garcia in the second, who extended his league-high hit streak to 15 games with the hit. The Sox tacked on two more in the fourth off of RHP Mike Foltynewicz thanks to an error at first.
Anderson, who was limited to about 65 pitches in his first rehab start since breaking his finger, tossed three and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out four and one walk.
Foltynewicz, who was consistently hitting the high-90s on the radar gun, pitched six innings, while allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and just one walk.
In his fifth and final rehab start, Nolan Arenado went 1-for-2 from the DH position before Rafael Ynoa pinched hit for him in the third. In his five games, Arenado hit .350 (7-for-20) with some solid defensive play.
Dan Houston came in relief of Anderson, retiring the final batter in the fourth and setting down the RedHawks in order in the fifth with three groundouts. However, trouble hit when Houston walked the first two batters in the sixth and gave up a three-run home run to right by Marc Krauss. Houston got out of the inning despite another a walk with a couple more groundouts and a fly out to left.
Leuris Gomez (1-1) came on for the Sky Sox, but surrendered the lead in the seventh when Jonathan Villar smacked a two-run single to hand the RedHawks the 5-3 lead.
After Jason Pridie singled home Tim Smalling, the Sky Sox loaded the bases up to give Nina a chance at redemption.
In his final rehab appearance, LHP Boone Logan came in to close out the game in the ninth. After a lead-off walk, Logan came back to punch out Villar and get a soft lineout and a groundout to short.
Six Sox players recorded two-hit games, led by Nina's two-hit, three-RBI night. Pridie, Garcia, Smalling, Ben Paulsen and Kyle Parker each collected two hits as well.
The Sky Sox and the RedHawks will meet tomorrow for an Independence Day celebration at Security Service Field. LHP Pedro Hernandez (5-4, 6.34 ERA) will go against RHP Jake Buchanan (6-4, 3.54 ERA) with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. (MT).
