Peterborough Petes News Release

(Peterborough, ON, June 29, 2014)- The Peterborough Petes are excited to announce that three players and prospects have been selected in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft this week-end in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nick Ritchie (10th overall to the Anaheim Ducks), Eric Cornel (44th overall to the Buffalo Sabres), and Jake Walman (82nd overall to the St. Louis Blues) were selected during the two-day draft.

Ritchie (1st round, 10th overall, Anaheim Ducks), who was projected to be drafted as high as fifth overall heading into the annual event, has played three seasons with the Peterborough Petes. The 6'3", 229lb winger was a dominant force in the 2013/14 OHL season, registering 39 goals, 35 assists, 74 points, and 136 penalty minutes in 61 games played to go along with five goals and five assists in ten playoff games, including the over-time game-winner in game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals against Kingston.

"It's an unbelievable feeling to be drafted by such a good team and organization." noted Ritchie just after being selected. "It's been a crazy few days and now that I'm finally drafted there's no feeling like it."

Eric Cornel (2nd round, 44th overall, Buffalo Sabres) received his share of attention heading into the NHL Draft, especially after a stellar second half of the 2013/14 season in which he totalled 25 goals, 37 assists, 62 points and 25 penalty minutes in 68 games. The centre/winger is known for his playmaking, vision, shot accuracy, and driving the net hard despite not yet having filled out his 6'2" frame.

The Petes selected defenceman Jake Walman from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens with their fifth round pick in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection in April. Walman (3rd round, 82nd overall, St. Louis Blues) is an elite skilled defender who isn't afraid to get dirty while also showing great poise with and without the puck at both ends of the rink.
