Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
The St. Paul Saints scored seven runs in the eighth inning to break open a tight game and win 13-5 on Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.
The Fargo-Moorhead's starting pitcher Danny Gutierrez would have to work out of an early jam, after giving up two base hits and a walk, bases were loaded in the top second with two men out. He would, however, eliminate the threat with a groundout to end the frame.
Trouble came again in the top third, with Jake Taylor doubling to left field, and Evan Bigley taking a five pitch walk. With two outs, Willie Cabrera got a base hit off of Gutierrez's foot, and with bases loaded, Gutierrez hit Brandon Tripp with his pitch, which opened up the score 1-0 for the visiting Saints. Another run and RBI was courtesy of Joey Becker, taking the bases loaded walk, 2-0 Saints.
The RedHawks answer came in the bottom of the third. Three straight walks on two outs to Zach Penprase, Ronnie Bourquin, and Sawyer Carroll brought up C.J. Retherford. He then got his pitch on a 1-1 count, and belted a grand slam to give Fargo-Moorhead a 4-3 lead.
St. Paul did not leave anything to chance, and got one run back, when Evan Bigley plated previously doubling Jake Taylor for to tie the game. The 5-4 lead for the Saints came in the form of Henry WIngley scoring on Angelo Songco's double in the same inning. The Saints did not retain their lead for long as Bourquin hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, to tie the score once again, this time at 5-5.
As the score kept going back and forth, the visiting St. Paul team took back their lead. The leadoff hitter Devin Thaut found a gap in the right field, and after a wild pitch by Justin Erasmus, the RBI came easy to Evan Bigley for the Saints' lead, 6-5. The game got out of hands for the RedHawks in the top of eighth. Four hits, two errors, and three walks meant total of seven runs in the top of the eighth inning, which made the final score of 13-5 for the visiting Saints.
Justin Erasmus suffered the loss in relief and is 2-1 on the year. Ben Hughes got the win and is 1-0. Last night of the series is schedule for tomorrow at 7:02pm. Purchase your tickets by calling (701) 235-6161 or by going to www.fmredhawks.com.
