KENT, June 24, 2014 - Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell today announced head coach Steve Konowalchuk has signed a three-year contract extension.

Konowalchuk was in the last year of a four-year contract he signed with the team when he was named the 16th head coach in franchise history on June 16, 2011.

"I am excited about the opportunity to stay with the T-Birds and to continue to build a winning culture with the organization," said Konowalchuk. "I am looking forward to continuing to work with the players, both veterans and rookies, as we work towards our goals this coming season. My family and I are very happy to call Seattle home."

"We are very happy to have Steve secured as our coach for the next four years," said Farwell. "Our team has showed steady improvement over the last three years and this is a very positive move for our franchise."

Last season Konowalchuk guided the T-Birds to a 41-25-2-4 regular season record. The team advanced to the second round of the WHL playoffs with a 4-1 first round series win over the Everett Silvertips.

The T-Birds home opener is Saturday, September 20, against the Everett Silvertips at 7:05pm at ShoWare Center. The T-Birds will release their full 2014-15 regular season schedule on Wednesday, June 25.
