Indianapolis Indians News Release

NORFOLK, VA - The Tribe survived a bullpen battle from the fifth inning through one out in the ninth, but a Xavier Paul single in the home half of the final frame plated an unearned run to give the Norfolk Tides (30-45) a 2-1 walkoff win over the Indianapolis Indians (43-31) on Friday night at Harbor Park.

Paul's ninth-inning single was his lone hit of the ballgame, and the DH found himself with the winning run 90 feet away after Francisco Peguero reached on a two-base throwing error to first and a wild pitch that moved him to third. Paul then worked a full count before turning the seventh pitch of his at-bat into the game-winning, walkoff knock.

Friday's one-run affair remained tight throughout the evening thanks to a strong showing from Indians starter Jake Brigham. The righty began the game on a tear, recording two straight 1-2-3 innings in the second and third frames to preserve a scoreless tie through the middle of the contest.

The Tribe then obtained its sole lead of the game in the fourth inning as Norfolk booted a Matt Hague grounder to allow Chris Dickerson to race home and put Indy ahead 1-0.

In his last frame of work, Brigham, who fanned six in 4.0ip, was unable to deliver a shutdown inning when his leadoff walk came around to score on a wild pitch and tie it 1-1 in the fourth.

Following Brigham's exit, long reliever Jay Jackson took over in the fifth and answered the call by one-hitting Norfolk through four scoreless innings. Jackson's work out of the 'pen kept the Tribe within striking distance until the Tides plated the game-winner.
