Cleveland Charge News Release

Canton Charge Head Coach Steve Hetzel has accepted an assistant coach position on Charlotte Hornets Head Coach Steve Clifford's staff, the Hornets and Charge announced today. Hetzel will join the NBA ranks after leading the Charge to their third playoff berth in as many seasons of existence following a 28-22 record in 2013-14. Mike Gansey, the Cavaliers Director of Development League Operations, will oversee an immediate search for Hetzel's replacement, which will include consideration of internal candidates.

"Steve was tremendous in his first-ever head coaching job after he came in with a plan and vision that was embraced by our players and staff," said Gansey. "We are appreciative of his hard work and the fine season he had in Canton while we wish him and his family the best of luck going forward." Hetzel was hired as the second Charge Head Coach in franchise history on September 11, 2013. As a team last year, Canton had both the most efficient shooting offense in the D-League (.479%) as well as the top scoring defensive unit (101.5 ppg). He will join the other former Charge Head Coach in the NBA, Alex Jensen, who is an assistant with the Utah Jazz.

"I want to thank the Cavaliers organization for giving me my first head coaching job and the opportunity to grow and learn hands-on," said Hetzel. "Also, I'd like to thank the staff and fans in Canton who made last season the most enjoyable of my career and an experience I'll never forget." Before coming to Canton, Hetzel spent four seasons with the Detroit Pistons as their Player Development Coach. Prior to joining the Pistons, Hetzel was the Video Coordinator for the Cavaliers for three seasons (2006-09). He got his start in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs and served as their Assistant Video Coordinator under Head Coach Gregg Popovich (2005-06).

The Canton Charge are exclusively operated by the Cleveland Cavaliers and also owned by a group led by Cavaliers Majority Owner and Quicken Loans Founder and Chairman Dan Gilbert. The group also owns and operates the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League and the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League, both playing at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.
