Montville and Moorhouse Homer in Sharks 12-3 Victory

Wilmington Sharks News Release

Wilmington, N.C. - Pitching doomed the Tobs at the Shark Tank as Wilson hurler Michael Wilson gave up seven runs in four innings, and leading the Sharks to a victory by a score of 12-3, boosting their record to 9-8, tying them with the Wilson Tobs in the East Division of the Coastal Plain League.

It was the Tobs who struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Taylor Nichols whacked a double to deep center off the base of the wall to start the inning and then Ben Schmucker drove in his CPL leading 17th run of the year on a bunt down the third base line. As the third basemen Alex Raburn attempted to make the throw to first, Nichols saw home plate vacated and continued his route to home, sliding in safely with a head first dive.

However, the lead was short lived as Sharks leadoff batter Michael Montville corked a home run to left to tie the game at 1-1. The Sharks would add to their lead in the next inning when they sent ten men to the plate. Wilson plunked Shawn Sanders to lead off the third, and Steven Linkous picked up a single to put two men on with nobody out. A strikeout appeared to give Wilson some breathing room, but a double by Nathan Becker gave the Sharks a 2-1 advantage. They would add to it on a single by Montville and after a walk and a strikeout, Tyler Carroll would drive home a run with a single of his own. A wild pitch during the next at bat allowed Montville from third, giving the Sharks a comfortable 5-1 lead after three complete.

Montville continued to hammer Tobs pitching in the bottom of the fourth inning. Steven Linkous walked and although Wilson retired the next two batters, Montville picked up a triple when Drew Cole misplayed a ball in center, allowing a run to score and giving Montville three RBI in as many at bats. At this point, Montville needed a double to compete the cycle. He would score a couple of pitches later on yet another wild pitch, resulting in a 7-1 Sharks' lead.

The Tobs grabbed one back in the fifth inning when Justin Carroll doubled with one out and two batters later Frankie Navarette drove in his first of the summer with a hard hit ball through the hole on the left side, cutting the deficit to 7-2.

On a night when everything went wrong for the Tobs, that five run deficit was as close as they would get. In the sixth inning, with two men on against Mike Belcher, Sharks' left fielder Nate Moorhouse blasted a three homer shot over the right center field wall, upping the Sharks advantage to 10-2. The Sharks would add another in the seventh against a wild John Allen and another in the eighth against Carson Jones who looked strong in an inning and two thirds.

Wilson batter and UNCW Seahawk Justin Carroll knocked an opposite field homerun in the ninth would make the final 12-3 in favor of the Sharks

Sharks play at the Shark Tank again Monday night against the Gastonia Grizzlies (10-4).
