Wild Host Law in Round One of CPIFL Playoffs

June 13, 2014 - Champions Professional Indoor Football League (CPIFL)
Wichita Wild News Release

WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Wild (10-2) will host the Dodge City Law (8-4) in the first game of the 2014 Champions Professional Indoor Football League playoffs; kick-off scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Hartman Arena on Saturday night. Wichita clinched the top seed in the CPIFL playoffs with a convincing 63-41 victory over the Salina Bombers last Saturday. Dodge City's playoff position was set prior to their last game, closing out the regular season with a 62-26 victory over the Kansas Koyotes.

The Law and Wild first squared off on March 22nd at Wichita's home opener. The Wild dominated the Law on both sides of the ball and cruised to a 40-7 victory. Law quarterback Charles McCullum went down early in that game, forcing the Law to sign another quarterback. In the next seven weeks, led by new quarterback Joshua Floyd, the Law rolled to a 6-1 record.

At 7-3 on the season, the Law met the Wild again, this time in Dodge City on May 24th for a rematch and a chance to secure a top two seed and a home playoff game. In that meeting, Wichita jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead after DB Kendrick Harper took an interception 45 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter. Things quickly went south for the Wild, with Dodge City, aided by short fields following several personal foul penalties, scoring 28 straight points. The shell-shocked Wild took the field with just 16 seconds remaining in the first half and on second down with 10 seconds remaining, QB Rocky Hinds lofted a pass high to the corner and Kassanavoid came down with his second touchdown of the night. Wichita entered halftime down 28-21, but following the last second touchdown seemed to have the momentum swinging back to their favor. Wichita went on to outscore the Law 26-10 in the second half and got out of Dodge with a 47-38 victory.

Rocky Hinds, 2014 CPIFL MVP, and the rest of the Wild offense will face the second best defense in the league this season. Dodge City was in the top three in most defensive statistics for the 2014 regular season. They were second to the Wild in both scoring defense (37.1) and total yards allowed (192.1 yards per game) and will need a strong showing to have any chance at success this Saturday. Though they face a tough task with the Law, the Wild offense has proved itself over the last three weeks, outscoring their last three opponents (coincidentally the other three playoff teams-Dodge City, Sioux City and Salina) 169-133.

Player(s) to Watch: Wild Defensive Front Four; Moss, McCartney, Jenkins, and Catchings

Dodge City quarterback Joshua Floyd presents a unique challenge to the Wild. Floyd is the only quarterback in the CPIFL to lead his team in rushing yards and will scramble early if he thinks there is a hole. With Wichita's defensive line and LB Jason Catchings being the best front line in the CPIFL, Floyd and the Law offense will have their work cut out for them. The front four have combined for 60 tackles for loss and 27.5 sacks this season. Floyd accounted for 4 touchdowns against the Wild, but was sacked 5 times and looked shaky throughout the second half. Look for Wichita's defensive line to put pressure on Dodge City early and flush Floyd out of the pocket right to Catchings.

The 2014 CPIFL playoffs kick off this Saturday, June 14 at 7:05 p.m. when the top seeded Wild host the Dodge City Law at Hartman Arena. Tickets for the game are just $5 and can be purchased by calling the Wild office at 316.440.5044. For those unable to attend, the game can be heard on 1410 KGSO (or kgso.com), or streamed live on americaone.com for a small fee.
