Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - In front of 313 fans at Cardines Field, the Newport Gulls defeated the New Bedford Bay Sox, 6-3. Newport pitchers combined to strike out 18 Bay Sox hitters, while the Gulls scored six runs on nine hits against Bay Sox pitchers.

Facing New Bedford starter Jimmy Gutowski, the Gulls were able to jump ahead in the first inning. After Tanner Donnels reached on an error by Bay Sox first baseman Lorenzo Papa, catcher Blaise Salter blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall in his first at-bat at Cardines Field. After the two-run homer, Nick Zammarelli doubled into the gap in left-center, and eventually scored when Colby Wright reached on a throwing error. At the end of the inning, the Gulls led the Bay Sox, 3-0.

Getting the start for the Gulls was southpaw Jack Patterson. Making his second start of the NECBL season, Patterson allowed three runs on two hits, striking out seven hitters in three innings of work. Despite walking seven batters in the outing, the sophomore from Bryant University was able to work efficiently out of jams throughout the night.

Patterson did run into trouble in the top of the second, walking three of the first four batters he faced. Eventually, Bay Sox shortstop Tim Hoehn got the Bay Sox on the scoreboard, driving in two runs with a scorching double down the left field line. Even though the bases were loaded, Zammarelli was able to make a nice defensive play at first base, helping Patterson escape the jam with a 3-2 Gulls lead.

In the third, Patterson still battled control issues, walking Brad Johnson to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Patterson walked Joshua Smith, but a passed ball and a throwing error by Salter enabled Johnson to score, tying the score up at 3.

Despite two innings of offensive silence, the Gulls came fighting back in the bottom of the fourth. After base hits by Zammarelli, Colby Wright, and P.J. Jones, A.J. Zarozny drove in the go-ahead run on an RBI single to right field. With new pitcher Gage Griffin on the hill, Shea Donlin kept the offense going, driving in Wright with an RBI single to left. In the next at-bat, Reed Gamache drove in Jones with a line-drive single to right. Griffin was able to retire the next two batters, but the Gulls increased their lead to 6-3.

In his first appearance with the Gulls in 2014, Mick Van Vossen came into the game for Patterson to start the fifth inning. Van Vossen was excellent in his first outing of the season, striking out 11 hitters while allowing just three hits in four innings of work.

The Gulls will travel to Forges Field to face the Plymouth Pilgrims on Thursday at 6:30. Layne Bruner (0-0, 7.20 ERA) will get the start for the Gulls, while the Pilgrims will counter with Adam Fossas (First Start). Newport Gulls Media Relations Coordinator Tim Scott will broadcast the game tomorrow alongside Plymouth broadcaster Rob Masse on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
