Farthing's Quality Start Ruined by Lady Luck

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs hit the ball hard, but it always seemed find the glove of a Wilmington defender as the "˜Dogs dropped a heartbreaker to the Wilmington Sharks 4-1 Monday night.
The Sharks jumped out to an early lead, as starting pitcher Jordy Farthing surrendered two runs (only one earned) in the bottom of the second.
The SwampDogs would chip away, scoring a run in the fourth when Norm Donkin lead off with a single, then stole second and third and scored when David Palenzuela hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Donkin would go 3-4 with a double and the run scored, and has been on a tear of late. After tonight's game, Donkin is now 10 for his last 16 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and seven RBIs.
Farthing would go on to have a quality start, going six innings, allowing just the two runs on six hits, walking three and striking out six.
Justin White would enter the game in the seventh and walk the only two batters he would face, before being replaced by Ryan Domingue.
Domingue would retire the first batter he would face, but an error from Brandon Metoyer would allow Steven Linkous to score the third run of the game.
He would retire the side in the seventh without further incident but would run into some trouble in the eighth, putting Joe DeVito at third with nobody out. Domingue would retire the next two batters but surrendered a triple to Linkous which brought home the fourth Shark run of the game.
In the ninth inning, Kyler Stout came on to try to get the save for the Sharks, and promptly surrendered a leadoff single to Lane Paul. Unfortunately, the "˜Dogs were unable to bring him home, and Sharks won.
The losing pitcher for the SwampDogs was Farthing, who fell to 0-2 on the season, the winner for the Sharks was Beau Dees, who gave up seven hits in six innings, but just the one run.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
