Latos, Gotay Guide Bats to Rain-Shortened Win

Louisville Bats News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. - On a damp evening in Rhode Island, the Louisville Bats (32-33) were able to earn a 3-1 victory in a rain-shortened tilt with the Pawtucket Red Sox (32-34). The victory was Louisville's first in the four-game series that concludes tomorrow afternoon.
Mat Latos was rock solid in his fourth rehab start with the Bats, claiming the victory in an unconventional complete game effort. In 5.2 innings of work, Latos only allowed a run on four hits and three walks while striking out four. Latos' Cincinnati teammate Joey Votto made his second rehab appearance on Monday night, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a strike out.
The Bats were able to strike first in the second inning courtesy of a pair of extra-base hits. After Neftali Soto stayed hot at the plate with a one-out double, Tucker Barnhart doubled two at-bats later to score the Louisville designated hitter and take an early 1-0 lead.
Votto ripped a one-out single to center field to kick off the Bats' second scoring threat in as many innings in the third frame. Ruben Gotay followed the Cincinnati slugger with some power of his own, blasting his team-leading 12th home run of the season to right field to expand the Louisville lead to 3-0.
Pawtucket would score its only run of the contest just before the rain came in the bottom of the sixth. Mike McCoy led off the inning with a walk and proceeded to steal second and third base to create the Red Sox's first threat of the night. Carlos Rivero's single score McCoy two at-bats later to cut the Bats' final lead to 3-1.
After a rain delay of one hour and seven minutes, the game was called with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Allen Webster (3-3) took the loss for the PawSox after he had settled in during the middle innings. He threw six innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits and three walks, but struck out eight.
Reds rehabbers Latos and Votto are two of seven players that have embarked on rehab stints with the Bats this season. After four starts, Latos is 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA. Votto is now 2-for-6 in a pair of appearances with Cincinnati's Triple-A affiliate.
Louisville will wrap up their eight-game road trip and their series with Pawtucket tomorrow afternoon. The Bats and the Red Sox's final meeting of 2014 is scheduled for a 12:05 p.m. first pitch. RHP Brett Marshall (0-1, 13.50) will continue a rehab stint for Louisville against LHP Felix Doubront, who will make a rehab start for Pawtucket.
