Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Buffalo Bisons, 6-5, on Monday night from NBT Bank Stadium. Steven Souza, Jr.'s two-run single put the Chiefs ahead for a good in a game that had three lead changes.
Buffalo (30-31) struck first in the third inning off Syracuse right-hander Josh Roenicke. Kenny Wilson led off with a double to left field. Wilson moved to third base on a Jonathan Diaz sacrifice bunt. A Darin Mastroianni single scored Wilson for a 1-0 Bisons lead.
Syracuse (37-27) responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. With one out, Sandy Leon singled to right field. After an Emmanuel Burriss groundout, Zach Walters homered off Buffalo right-hander Radhames Liz to give Syracuse a 2-1 lead.
The Bisons came right back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jared Goedert singled to lead off the inning. A Roenicke wild pitch allowed Goedert to advance to second. Goedert then scored on a Dan Johnson double to tie the game at two. A Brad Glenn single put runners on the corners for Buffalo. A.J. Jimenez reached on a fielder's choice in which Glenn was thrown out at second, but Johnson scored to give the Bisons a 3-2 lead. With Jimenez on first base, Matt Tuiasosopo singled to put runners on first and second for Wilson. Wilson then singled to score Jimenez and extend the Buffalo lead to two, 4-2.
The Chiefs cut the deficit to one in the bottom half of the fourth with one swing of the bat. Tyler Moore led of the inning with a solo home run to left field for Syracuse's third run.
Syracuse regained the lead in the seventh inning off Buffalo relievers Luis Ayala and Ryan Tepera. Back-to-back singles off Ayala by Brandon Laird and Sandy Leon put runners on first and second with no outs to start the bottom of the inning. After Tepera relived, Burriss bunted into a fielder's choice, with Laird thrown out at third base. Walters then walked to load the bases and bring up Souza, who smashed a 2-1 pitch into left field. Leon and Burriss each crossed home to give the Chiefs a 5-4 lead.
The Chiefs extended their lead in the eight off left-hander Rob Rasmussen. With one out and Brian Goodwin on first base, Brandon Laird lined out to Goedert at third, but Goedert made an errant throw trying to double off Goodwin at first, and Goodwin advanced to third. The Chiefs' center fielder then scored on a Rasmussen wild pitch, and Syracuse extended its lead to two, 6-4.
Buffalo cut the Syracuse lead to one in the ninth off right-hander Warner Madrigal. With one out, Goins doubled to right field and Goedert singled him home to cut the Chiefs lead to one. Madrigal recovered, however, by striking out Johnson and retiring Glenn on a fly out to left field.
Syracuse goes for its third consecutive series win tomorrow morning against Buffalo. Right-hander Taylor Jordan will take the mound for the Chiefs against Bisons right-hander Deck McGuire. First pitch is set for 10:30 AM.
