Johnson's Gem Not Enough in 2-1 Loss to Gwinnett
June 9, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
Kris Johnson turned in eight strong innings but it wasn't enough as the Red Wings offense mustered just a Brad Nelson solo home run in a 2-1 loss to the Gwinnett Braves Monday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
With the loss, the Wings (36-28) have now suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since May 12. The Red Wings will need to win the finale Tuesday to split the set and avoid losing their first series in nearly a month.
The offense - after scoring 40 runs over five games in Charlotte - has scored just six runs over the first three games of this series going 4-for-28 (.143) with runners in scoring position.
The Wings best chance Monday came in the seventh inning when they loaded the bases on three singles with only one out. However, Eric Farris grounded into a fielder's choice to third that cut down a runner at the plate and James Beresford lined out to third off G-Braves reliever Atahualpa Severino to end the threat.
Rochester also loaded the bases with two outs in the first but Wilkin Ramirez hit a comebacker to Gwinnett starter Cody Martin to end the inning.
Ramirez did pick up a hit in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games - the second longest streak by a Red Wing this season (Parmelee, 15). Over the 11-game streak, Ramirez is hitting .341 (15-for-44).
Nelson's third home run of the season came leading off the fourth inning and cut the G-Braves lead to 2-1.
Gwinnett's only two runs on the night came in the third inning on an RBI triple from Phil Gosselin and a run scoring single off the bat of Tyler Pastornicky.
From the fourth through eighth innings, Johnson allowed just three base runners as the Wings southpaw turned in the eight-inning complete game. Johnson (6-3), who saw his five-game winning streak snapped - allowed eight hits and no walks while striking out five over his season-high 116-pitch outing.
The Wings wrap up the series and the homestand on Tuesday night with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch from Coolray Field. RHP Trevor May (5-4, 2.80) will take the mound looking to send the Wings home with a win.
WINGS THINGS : OF Daniel Ortiz (1-for-4) extended his hit streak to 6 games, batting .304 (7-for-23). Combined with Double-A, Ortiz now has a hit in 29 of his last 33 games over which he's hit .369 (48-for-130)...LHP Scott Diamond also suffered a loss in an eight-inning complete-game this season (May 8 @ Columbus)...Johnson has now thrown 108 pitches or more in four of his last five starts...The Wings lost just their 6th game this season when they hit a home run (21-6)...The Wings fall to 12-8 in one-run contests this season.
