Baker Tosses Complete Game Shutout in Front of 5,100 Plus

June 7, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) Columbia Blowfish

COLUMBIA, SC - To say it was an electric atmosphere at "The Cap" on Saturday night might be a gross understatement.

With a packed house of over 5,100 fans in attendance for Military Appreciation Night and Ike Night at Historic Capital City Stadium, the Columbia Blowfish took to the field looking to provide the home crowd with plenty to cheer about against the Forest City Owls.

Early momentum proved to be the difference in the game, as early run support and masterful pitching helped vault the Blowfish to their 3rd victory at home this season.

The Blowfish offense struck first in the bottom of the first inning, something Columbia has done quite a bit recently.

Charleston Southern's Chase Shelton smacked a double down the third base line scoring Allen Staton (North Greenville) all the way from first, giving the home squad a 1-0 lead after an inning of play.

That proved to be quite enough run support for starting pitcher Robbie Baker on the night. Baker (Richmond) was dealing from the first pitch on his way to a complete game shutout victory, improving to 2-0 with his second win of the season.

Baker went 9 innings strong, allowing just 5 hits and a walk while striking out 6 Forest City Owl batters.

Erik Barber (Central Florida) was 1 for 4 on the night with a run batted in and a run scored, and Robbie Street (Charleston Southern) went 2 for 3 with a run batted in as well to round out the night offensively.

Following the game, an unbelievable fireworks show mesmerized those in attendance, as fans and troops sang together throughout. A "USA!" chant even broke out in unison at the conclusion of the fireworks show.

Roughly 3,000 troops were on hand for Military Appreciation Night and the celebration of the birthday of the United States Army. There was also a presentation honoring the late Ike McLeese, who was a longtime friend and fan of baseball in Columbia.

The Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce helped sponsor the patriotic themed night that had many at Historic Capital City Stadium decked out in their best red, white and blue apparel.

With the victory Columbia is now 5-6 on the season, which includes a 3-1 mark at home at Historic Capital City Stadium thus far.

The Blowfish play 3 times at home next week. They take on Morehead City, Florence, and Asheboro on June 10th, 11th, and 13th, respectively.
