Eugene Emeralds News Release

EUGENE, OR - The Eugene Emeralds are excited to announce the completion of the 2014 EMazing Reading Program! Sluggo and the Emeralds reached over 20,000 children and traveled over 800 miles to present the EMazing Reading Program to over 40 participating schools.

To get students excited about the Reading Program, Sluggo and the Emeralds Front Office staff visited each school, and acted out the famous "Casey at the Bat" poem. At the end of every assembly students were asked why reading is important to them and were told how reading could earn them a free seat at an Emeralds game this summer.

"This is a program that has grown every year, and we are so excited to continuously have new schools on board as well as seeing some of the kids that have been a part of this program year after year," said Emeralds General Manager Allan Benavides.

In order for each student to win a voucher good for two free tickets to an Ems game, each reader must complete ten assigned reading tasks and record them on their EMazing Reading Program bookmark. Each task is assigned to the student by his or her teacher based on their grade level, or individual reading level. Last season student participants were able to redeem their vouchers for three different dates on Opening Weekend. In order to accommodate the increase in student participation and busy summer schedules, the Emeralds have added an additional game for students to redeem their vouchers for tickets. This season students who earned free tickets can use their vouchers on June 18, June 19, June 26 and June 30.

"Our students were so excited to have Sluggo visit the school. The team explained the reading program very clearly, and really got the kids excited about reading to earn Em's tickets. It's a great program to promote reading, and gives the kids a fun reward to work toward. We want Sluggo back next year too!" said Kelli Glazener, Family Center Coordinator at Riverbend Elementary.

The Emeralds will kick off their All-Star season on Wednesday, June 18 at PK Park against the Boise Hawks. 2014 Season Tickets, Mini-Plans and individual game tickets are available now by phone at 541-342-5367, online at www.emeraldsbaseball.com, or in-person at the Emeralds Ticket Office located at 2760 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
