Edge Fall in Shootout at Omaha

OMAHA - The Bloomington Edge came up short in a back-and-forth battle on Saturday night, losing 80-69 to the Omaha Beef at Ralston Arena.

The Beef grabbed a 20-7 lead after one quarter on three passing touchdowns from Craig Coffin to Matt Thayer, Jared Elmore and Anthony Parks. Andre Raymond scored the lone Edge touchdown on a one-yard plunge that tied the game just over four minutes into the contest.

Raymond added three touchdowns in the second quarter on a pair of three-yard runs and another one-yard surge plus touchdown passes from Charles Dowdell to LaVaughn Macon of 27 ad 13 yards, but the Beef countered on runs from eight and 16 yards by Preston Brown and a six-yard connection from Coffin to Elmore to take a 46-42 lead into halftime.

The teams traded scores in the third quarter with Beef scores on a six-yard pass to Parks and a one-yard strike to Elmore, and Edge touchdowns on a 34-yard connection from Dowdell to David Brown and a 19-yard pass to Macon to cut the Beef lead to 59-56 after three quarters.

The back-and-forth scoring continued in the fourth quarter beginning with another seven-yard pass to Thayer from Coffin in the first minute followed by an Edge score from Dowdell to Brown for 19 yards just over three minutes later to cut the Edge deficit to 66-63. Coffin connected from 13 yards to Elmore with 7:40 left to put the Beef ahead 73-63 followed by Dowdell's one-yard sneak with 4:38 left to cut the score to 73-69. The Edge regained the ball in the final two minutes but the Beef put the game away with a 15-yard interception return for a touchdown by Alsid Panteau.

Dowdell was 22-of-35 through the air with one interception and five touchdowns for 305 yards. Brown caught seven passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns to lead Edge receivers, while Raymond carried the ball 16 times for 31 yards. Cody Acree registered 10 tackles for the Edge to lead all defenders.

Coffin led the Beef offense with 221 yards on 24-of-35 passing with nine touchdowns. Elmore caught 13 passes for 128 yards and five touchdowns. Brown led Beef rushers with 61 carries and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Panteau made eight tackles to lead the Beef defense.

Both teams take 4-7 records into the final week of Champions Professional Indoor Football League play. The Edge conclude the season at home next Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. kickoff against the Lincoln Haymakers. Group discounts are available by calling 309-434-2980.
