Improved Dodge City Team Faces Wichita

Dodge City Law News Release

The Dodge City Law will host the Wichita Wild on Saturday in a game which will give the Law the opportunity to redeem themselves following the 40-7 loss that they suffered on the road to Wichita on March 22.

Currently, Wichita has a record of 7-2 and is ranked second in the CPIFL behind Sioux City. The Law are ranked third with a record of 7-3 and have already clinched a playoff berth.

During the March 22 contest, the Law lost quarterbacks Charles McCullum and Dennis Havrilla to injuries, both of which occurred in the backfield.

The following week, quarterback Joshua Floyd joined the team and has led the Law to wins in six of the seven games he has played.

Since Floyd's arrival, the offensive line has steadily improved and has shown that they are capable of protecting the quarterback and helping to keep the run game going.

"We really struggled against Wichita when we played them in March," Law Head Coach Sean Ponder said, "But, we took the disappointment of that loss and used it as motivation to improve as a team. On offense we have done a better job of protecting our quarterback and moving the ball down the field."

Wichita lost defensive lineman Matt Moss to the NFL, but still has personnel up front who can get to the quarterback and disrupt offenses.

"I know I've said it before, but the most important thing for us as an offense is to protect our quarterback." Ponder said. "Whenever you face a defensive line like Wichita's that becomes even more important. Our guys have improved quite a bit since that first game and we will need them to continue playing well on Saturday."

The Law defense will be tasked with slowing down the high-powered offense led by quarterback Rocky Hinds.

"Rocky is one of the better quarterbacks in the league and he has the numbers to back that up," Ponder said. "He has good vision and can make all of the throws he needs to make."

Still, Ponder believes that the Law defense has the ability to contain Wichita's offense.

"Our defense has played well on a consistent basis throughout the season," Ponder said. "In the last three or four games they have played especially well. We have one of the better defensive lines in the league and a very deep defensive secondary. We know we have the talent to get the job done; now we just have to execute."

The outcome of Saturday's game will be consequential for both teams as each tries to move up in the standings and earn the chance to host one or more playoff games.

"We are approaching this game like a playoff game," Ponder said. "This game will go a long way in determining where we end up in the standings and where we play in the postseason. Needless to say, it's important to us."
