Denver Cutthroats Second Season Comes to a Close

Allen - The Denver Cutthroats and Allen Americans met for Game Five in the 2014 Playoff Finals on Saturday, May 10 at the Allen Event Center. The Americans came into the night leading 3-1, looking for their second Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Championship. The Cutthroats battled to win a second game in the finals series against the defending champions, but fell 5-2.

The opening period saw a lone goal by Kyle Fletcher (Cam Reid, Lee Moffie) at the 10:39 mark to give the Denver Cutthroats a 1-0 lead heading into the second 20 minutes of play.

The Americans came back with a vengeance in the second period to put up four goals against the Cutthroats. Darryl Bootland (Kale Kerbashian) tied the score at one just five minutes into the second frame. Jamie Schaafsma (Daniel Tetrault, Jonathon Zion) found the back of the Cutthroats net to give Allen the lead for the first time in the night. Kale Kerbashian (Jonathan Lessard) extended the Americans lead with a shot past Cutthroats netminder Kent Patterson. Less than two minutes later, Jonathan Lessard (Anthony Maiani, Zion) scored Allen's fourth consecutive goal to close the period 4-1 Americans.

With exactly a minute remaining in the final period and an extra attacker on the ice, Lee Moffie (Mikael Tam) scored the Cutthroats second goal of the night to cut the deficit 4-2. The Americans Kale Kerbashian (Brian McMillin, Spencer Asuchak) fired the puck on the empty net for the game-winning goal. Allen closed the 2014 Playoff series 4-1 over Denver with the 5-2 victory on Saturday night. The Allen Americans are the third team in the Central Hockey League to win the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup two years in a row.
