Cannons Fall in Overtime Thriller against Denver

May 10, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Boston Cannons

BOSTON, MA (May 10, 2014) - The Denver Outlaws extended their regular season winning streak to 23 games by defeating the Boston Cannons by a score of 10-9 in overtime. Denver scored four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to continue their winning ways.

The Outlaws scored less than one minute into the game when Justin Pennington's juke faked out Cannons Paul Rabil and found the back of the net. Boston goalie Jordan Burke kept the score at 1-0 6:18 into the game, with a fantastic point blank kick save. Boston capitalized on this save when Jack Rice scored his third goal of the season, assisted by Will Manny. Denver then scored two consecutive goals within a minute of each other, ending the first quarter 3-1.

Boston won its first face-off of the game to start the second period after losing the first five face-offs in the first quarter. Kevin Buchanan scored the second goal for the Cannons after dodging and weaving between two Denver defenders. Boston scored two minutes later when Scott Ratliff gained possession in the defensive zone and brought the ball the length of the field to score on a fantastic individual effort. Boston scored a third consecutive goal to take the lead thanks to Steven Berger, assisted by Kevin Buchanan. Denver scored just before the end of the half when Domenic Sebastiani tied up the game 4-4.

The game experienced some lightning in the area causing a delay to the game with 8 seconds remaining in the second quarter. League regulations mandate that there needs to be thirty minutes between lightning strikes before the game can resume play. There was a 52 minute delay before the game resumed.

The Cannons quickly get on the board in the third quarter with a goal from Kevin Buchanan, assisted by Paul Rabil. Three minutes later Mike Stone scored, assisted once again by Paul Rabil. Denver scored with five minutes left in the quarter by Eric Law. The quarter ended with a score of 6-5, in favor of Boston.

The fourth quarter started with Boston scoring 1:50 into the game with a man up advantage. Jack Rice scored his second goal of the game and was assisted by Paul Rabil. Denver scored four consecutive goals to take the lead 9-7 John Grant Jr., Jeremy Sieverts, Chris Bocklet and Drew Snider each tallying a goal. Boston responded immediately by winning the draw and Brodie Merrill scoring 8 seconds later. Boston tied the game up with just 27 seconds left, when Kevin Buchanan scored his third goal of the game assisted by Paul Rabil who had his fourth assist of the game. Regulation ended with a tied score of 9-9.

Boston won the initial draw in overtime ad got a good shot away but was saved by Denver goalie Jesse Schwartznan. Denver immediately came down the field, had a shot rebound off the post directly back to the shooter who then scored the game winner, 54 seconds into overtime. Chris Bocklet scored the game winning goal, his second goal of the game.

Schwartznan who got the win for the Denver Outlaws had 24 saves of 33 shots on goal. Jordan Burke who took the loss, saved 16 of 26 shots on goal.

The Cannons look to return to action next Saturday, May 17th at 6:00pm against the Charlotte Hounds for their third home game of the season.
