Ice Can't Hold Lead, Black Hawks Take Game One

May 9, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Indiana Ice News Release

Two rebounds spelled defeat for the Indiana Ice Friday night in game one of the Clark Cup finals in Waterloo, Iowa.

The first setback came when the Ice allowed the Black Hawks to rebound from a 2-0 deficit. The second was a rebound left in front of the Indy net which became the game-winner as Waterloo took a 1-0 series lead with a 4-2 victory.

The hosts' Blake Winiecki buried a backhander 6:11 before the final horn off Derek Pratt's wrister and Jake Horton scored an empty net goal with 12 seconds remaining.

Nothing went to form in the first two periods. Indiana built a 2-0 lead at 5:09 of the middle frame before Waterloo scored two unanswered goals to send the game into the third period tied at 2-apiece.

Josh Jacobs deflected Brian Pinho's blue line slap shot before the hosts combined a strong push back with a little luck and accurate sniping. After an Indy defenseman fell at center ice, two teammates chased the puck carrier and allowed Tyler Sheehy two park unchecked at the goal crease of Jason Pawloski. Sheehy buried his sixth goal of the playoffs at 6:31 to cut the Ice lead in half.

The Black Hawks tied it up four seconds after Indiana killed another shorthanded stint when a puck hit Pawloski in the shoulder took a bad bounce into his net.

Despite Waterloo's push, the Ice spent the lion's share of the second stanza in the Black Hawks defensive zone. Everyone in the Young Arena thought Conway potted his second goal of the game at 13:25 of the second period----except the referee. The officials waived off their second apparent score of the game when they whistle blew because the puck was out of their sight-lines.

The hosts played better in the first period but trailed 1-0 before the first intermission. Indiana allowed two odd-man rushes, but walked away unscathed when Waterloo did not convert on either opportunity. Indy also was forced to cancel West Division champion's potent power play and did so successfully by allowing no shots on goal on the call five minutes after the opening puck drop.

Luck played a big role in a Hawk's shot which rang off the crossbar but the official ruled the puck did not cross the Ice goal line.

Despite all those headwinds, Indy held a 1-0 lead when Scott Conway buried a rebound of Tyler Tschantz shot at 2:31.

Game two will be played Saturday at Young Arena. The puck drops at 7:00 pm.
