Northern Kentucky River Monsters News Release

The Northern Kentucky River Monsters won their 5th consecutive game last Saturday night in Dayton, Ohio win a 36-24 win over the Dayton Sharks. The win clinches a berth in the South Division Championship game against the Marion Blue Racers next Saturday night in Marion, Ohio.

The River Monsters scored on Davis's first pass of the game to #9 Shawn McGarity for a 27 yard TD, but then cooled off for a slow start against the Sharks trailing 9-7 after 1 quarter. The 2nd quarter was anything but cold as the River Monsters erupted for 27 points, which was led off by a huge goal line stand by the dominating River Monsters defense. Dayton took over on the Monsters 1 after a kickoff return, the Monsters stymied the Dayton Sharks offense, moving the ball backwards every play until 4th down when safety #21 Jeff Ward intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned it 51 yards all the way for a TD giving the monsters a lead they would never relinquish. Other scores that follow in the second half we are 11 yard TD run by Qb #10 Antonio Davis, 3 yard TD pass from Davis to TE/WR #14 Clay Cunningham, and at 10 yard TD Run by #6 Maurice Douse. River Monsters defense also was in sync holding the Sharks to 30yds on 19 plays in the 1st half.

After halftime the Sharks determined not to drown in their own tank, came out with momentum and scored on their first two drives cutting the Monster lead to 34-24. Their momentum hit at wall as D'arrell Brown sacked the Sharks QB Evan Sawyer in their own end zone scoring a safety with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter making the score 36-24 Monsters. The offense took to the ground grinding out a drive lasting 4 mins turning over the ball to the Sharks at the 1 min warning. The Sharks out of time outs competed a few plays, but an INT by DB #12 Brian Abshire sealed the deal, and the Monsters Win.

Coach Goodpaster had this to say after the game. "It wasn't pretty, but at this point of the season the object is to get the win, our Defense came up huge tonight only allowing a total of 101yds on 41 plays. We had some coverage break downs on special teams which will be worked on this week. Offensively I thought Maurice Douse played his best game of the season so far, as always our receiver play was very strong, Willie Idlette and Ricardo Lenhart combined for 6 receptions for 109yds. We have a lot of work to do this coming week to prepare for a very good Marion team."

The River Monster continue their swim north next week as they travel to Marion Ohio to take on the Marion Blue Racers. Kickoff is on Saturday May 10th at 7:30pm at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 220 East Fairgrounds St, 43302.
