Ohio Machine Falls 14-12 to Denver Outlaws in Back-And-Forth Battle

May 4, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Ohio Machine

The Ohio Machine stormed back from an early four goal deficit before losing to the Denver Outlaws, 14-12, on Star Wars Day at Mile High Stadium.

Denver midfielder Jeremy Sieverts scored with less than three minutes remaining in the game to push the Outlaws ahead, 13-12. Eric Law added insurance with a goal in the final minute to seal the outcome.

Machine midfielder Kyle Harrison scored his second goal of the game to tie the score at 12 with just more than five minutes left on the clock before Sieverts' game-winner.

Machine attackman Marcus Holman scored his third goal of the day in the fourth quarter to make the lead 11-7 in favor of Ohio and cement an eight-goal swing. Denver answered with two goals of its own, before Outlaw attackman John Grant Jr. tied the score with a behind-the-back goal.

Coming off a season-opening victory against the Charlotte Hounds April 26 that saw the Machine hold Charlotte scoreless in the first and fourth quarters, Ohio found itself on the wrong end of a shutout frame this time around.

The Machine, now 1-1 this season, went down 3-0 in the first quarter and dropped to a 4-0 deficit before tallying three goals in the second. Midfielder Kevin Cooper scored twice to fuel the charge as the Machine - dressed in storm trooper uniforms - found its way back into the game.

A two-man advantage led to a Bill McGlone goal - the midfielder's first in Machine uniform - to tie the score at five in the third quarter.

Jeremy Sieverts answered minutes later with a two-point goal of his own, but Ohio midfielder Greg Downing scored on the other end to keep the Machine within one. Holman evened the score once again with a dive around the cage and a slick flick over his head.

While both teams had their moments, neither truly pulled away throughout the day.

Holman and Cooper both finished with hat tricks while Harrison added two goals and midfielders Peter Baum, Greg Downing and McGlone, as well as attackman Steele Stanwick added one goal each. Stanwick led the game with four assists while Holman and midfielder Jake Bernhardt each had two.

Machine goalie Scott Rodgers made 12 saves from 25 shots on goal while Denver goalie Jesse Schwartzman managed seven saves from 19 shots on target. Eric O'Brien won 8-of-13 face offs for Ohio while former Machine face-off man Anthony Kelly won 14-of-28 for Denver.

Law tallied a game-high four goals for the Outlaws while Chris Bocklet added two goals and two assists.

Next up, the Machine travels to Boca Raton, Fla., and take on the Florida Launch on May 10. Ohio's first home game is May 17 when the Machine hosts the New York Lizards at Selby Stadium in Delaware, Ohio. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
