Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons were eliminated from the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs, as the team was defeated by the Providence Bruins by the final score of 6-3 in the decisive Game 5 Saturday night at the MassMutual Center.

Despite scoring three goals in the first 11:01 of the game, two of which were netted by captain Ryan Craig, the Falcons could not hold the early lead to advance in the postseason. Craig's two goals upped his playoff total to a team-high four in the series' five games. The Abbotsford, British Columbia native has amassed 10 goals in 37 career AHL postseason games, 13 of which in a Springfield uniform.

Second-year forward Michael Chaput notched the team's first goal, giving the Falcons their first 1-0 lead of the series at the 4:27 mark of the first period. For Chaput, the tally was his second of the series and third playoff goal was his career.

The Bruins got multi-point efforts from four players - Seth Griffith (2-1-3), Joe Morrow (1-2-3), Matt Lindblad (1-1-2) and Alexander Khokhlachev (1-1-2). Griffith's three-point night doubled his series point total and propelled the 5-foot-9, 189-pound winger to a team-high six points in the series.

Lindblad, along with teammates Ryan Spooner - who notched an empty-net goal with 1:05 remaining in regulation Saturday - and Matt Fraser, led the Bruins with three goals in the series.

Anton Forsberg (0-1) made 24 saves on 26 shots in 44:58 in relief of starting goaltender Mike McKenna. McKenna allowed three goals on six shots through 13:33.

Providence netminder Niklas Svedberg (2-2) stopped 20 of 21 shots in 49:57 after entering the game in favor of the starter Malcolm Subban. Subban allowed two goals on seven shots in 9:56 of action.

With the loss, Springfield's record-breaking season came to an end. The team posted a franchise-high 47 wins, 100 points and .658 points percentage during the regular season.
