Kings Add Four Infielders

SPRINGFIELD, Oh. - The Champion City Kings inaugural roster continues to shape up as four infielders were added to the roster for 2014. Nathan Suyematsu from Pacific University, Corey Pool from Western Nevada Community College, Landon Lucansky from Creighton University, and Saginaw Valley State's Chris Perkovich have all signed to be in Springfield this summer.

Suyematsu, a sophomore from Tualatin, Ore., plays both football and baseball at Pacific. Through 33 games played, he leads the Boxers in hitting with a .331 average, has racked up 11 doubles and stolen eight bases on nine attempts.

"There aren't many athletes anymore that can handle two sports in college," said Kings manager Brett Neffendorf. "The amazing thing about Nathan is he's not only playing football and baseball, but he's pitching and playing infield." Suyematsu currently owns a 3.03 ERA through 10 appearances.

"He adds incredible versatility to an already talented infield and will also add to our deep pitching staff," Neffendorf added.

Pool is a 6-foot-2, 223 pound freshman infielder from Beavertown, Ore., and has played in 28 games for the Western Nevada Wildcats so far in 2014. He has hit three home runs and owns a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

"Corey is one of the better athletes I've seen come out of the northwest in past four or five years," Neffendorf said. "For a guy his size to move the way he does and also be able to play the corners in the infield and outfield is impressive."

Lucanksy is a junior at Creighton University after transferring from Missouri following the 2012 season. The Leawood, Kan. native has appeared in 21 games for the Bluejays.

"We feel fortunate to have picked up Landon," said Neffendorf. "He can hit for average, go gap to gap and step in as a run producer if needed."

Perkovich is a 6-foot-2 shortstop from Canton, Mich. and has been a staple for the Cardinals, starting in all 39 games this season.

"Chris is another one of those infielders you'd guess would be at first base with his size," said Neffendorf. "You'll see right away his size is deceiving and his ability to cover ground in the six-hole is second to none."

The Kings open the 2014 season at home against the Chillicothe Paints on Wednesday, May 28 at 7:05 p.m.
