Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Calgary, AB. - A total of thirty-four Manitobans were chosen in Thursday's Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Leading the way was 6'1" 180 lb center Stelio Mattheos of the Winnipeg AAA Bantam Monarchs, who was chosen first overall by the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Wheat Kings, who were selecting first for the first time in franchise history, opted for a talented Winnipeg center for the second straight year after choosing Nolan Patrick fourth overall in 2013. Mattheos also became the first Manitoban to be drafted first overall in the WHL bantam draft since Moose Jaw selected Quinton Howden in 2007.

Mattheos was one of six Manitobans to be chosen by the Wheat Kings Thursday, joining forwards Connor Gutenberg, James McIsaac, Leif Mattson, defenceman Dane Hirst and netminder Justin Klassen. The only local product to be taken by Brandon, Gutenberg led the Bantam Wheat Kings in scoring with 20 goals and 40 points in 2013-14.

The WHL bantam draft is the first opportunity for WHL clubs to replenish their systems with graduating bantam-aged players.

Players eligible for today's draft were 1999-born players who reside in Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alaska and the western United States.

Among the top western Manitoba selections were Boissevain netminder Rilan Rommelaere, who was taken 39th overall by Medicine Hat, Killarney defenceman Cody Thompson (52nd overall) by Prince Albert and Gutenberg, who went to the Wheat Kings in round five (106th overall).
