Chiefs Defeat Beloit Twice in Doubleheader
April 30, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, Wisc - The Snappers fell to the Peoria Chiefs, the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, in both games of the doubleheader on Tuesday evening. Both games were scheduled to be seven inning games but that just wasn't the case this evening.
Peoria started off hot, with their starting pitcher, Alex Reyes pitching five innings and allowing only one hit. It also didn't hurt that the Chiefs jumped out to a 10-0 lead. That one hit allowed by Reyes was in the fifth inning and was the first homer of the year from Ryan Huck, which also scored Boog Powell. The Snappers attempted a late game comeback, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a two run homer from BA Vollmuth. Junior Mendez got the loss for Beloit and finished the night with a 11.00 ERA and goes to 0-2 on the season as the Snappers fell to Peoria by a score of 11-6.
The weather had been questionable all day and was drizzling off and on throughout the first game. The second game was scheduled to start 30 minutes after the last out of the first game but the grounds crew was forced to put on the tarp between the games and ended up having to postpone the second game for about an hour and a half. After the delay, the second game finally started at about 8:00pm.
The night cap was fairly even throughout most of the game. The lead just kept on going back and forth between Peoria and Beloit. The Snappers' offense was significantly helped out by the two solo home runs hit by Ryan Huck and Michael Soto. Huck's homer in the second game was his second of the season, and his second of the evening. His first one came in the first game of the doubleheader. Chris Lamb also did his part to keep Beloit in the game by coming in to replace Brent Powers in the top of the fourth and pitching five scoreless innings. The game was only supposed to last seven innings but at 3-3, they needed extras to decide the outcome of this one. Andres Avila came in to replace Lamb in the top of the ninth and allowed three runs. Unfortunately, the Snappers couldn't come back and lost to the Chiefs, 6-3.
The Snappers play against the Peoria Chiefs again at Pohlman Field in Beloit tomorrow at 6:30pm. Stop by the Snappers front office, call (608) 362-2272, visit www.snappersbaseball.com, or go to our Inside the Park app on your iPhone or Android to get tickets. If you can't make the game, listen to it on The Big AM 1380.
