Mayers Lifts Cardinals over Mets

April 23, 2014 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

Jupiter, FL - Michael Mayers found his groove early on, David Washington sparked the offense, and the Palm Beach Cardinals slipped by the St. Lucie Mets 3-1 on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The two teams will play the final game of the series on Thursday night.

Mayers set the Mets down in order in the first inning and never lost the momentum. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits and fanned six batters over six innings to pick up his second win and second quality start of the season. St. Lucie's lone run came in the second inning - a sacrifice fly off the bat of Albert Cordero - but Mayers (2-2) was able to quiet the St. Lucie bats the rest of the way.

Iden Nazario struck out one and surrendered one hit over three scoreless innings of relief to pick up his second save of 2014.

The Palm Beach offense provided just enough run support with two RBI groundouts and Washington's first triple of the season.

The Cardinals (9-10) struck first with a run in the first inning. Starlin Rodriguez singled on a line drive to left field and moved to third after Breyvic Valera recorded an opposite field hit through the hole at second. Rodriguez advanced the remaining 90 feet to give the Birds a 1-0 lead when Jacob Wilson grounded out to short.

The Mets (11-8) evened the score with a run in the second, but Washington helped the Cardinals regain control in the fourth. After Anthony Garcia hit a chopper up the middle for a single, Washington drove a line drive down the right field line and beat the throw at third for an RBI triple. Matt Williams followed with another RBI groundout to plate Washington and bring the score to 3-1.

Mayers and Nazario held the St. Lucie offense to just two hits the rest of the game to preserve the victory.

Despite the quality start, Gabriel Ynoa (2-1) took the loss for St. Lucie after allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings of work.

The Cardinals and Mets will wrap up the series on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium. RH Joe Cuda (0-2, 9.26 ERA) will start for Palm Beach against LH Steven Matz (1-1, 2.00 ERA) for St. Lucie. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
