Travelers Return Favor by Shutting out Drillers

The Drillers and the Travelers seem to be attempting to set a Texas League record for fewest runs scored in a four-game series. Arkansas took game three of the series on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 1-0, bringing the total amount of runs scored by both teams in three games thus far in the series to four.
Both starting pitchers in the game were stellar. Travelers starter Kramer Sneed pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out three. Carmine Giardina relieved Sneed and pitched a scoreless eighth, and David Carpenter notched his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth, completing the shutout of the Drillers.
In his fourth start of the season, Jon Gray pitched extremely well. Gray took a perfect game into the sixth inning, which was broken up on an Andy Workman seeing-eye single that just snuck by shortstop Joey Wong. Nelson Gonzalez pitched a perfect two innings as well, but the outstanding pitching effort would fall short as the Drillers could not manage a run.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Workman stole second base after singling to break up Gray's perfect outing. Kyle Hudson then singled to almost the exact same spot as Workman did, bouncing just past a diving Wong and scoring Hudson to give Arkansas a 1-0 lead.
Alex Yarbrough, the next batter, again put a ground ball up the middle for a base hit. However, second baseman Tim Smalling made a great play to field the ball and throw out Hudson at home for the third out, who was trying to score from second on the infield single.
The Drillers seemed once again to come close to a ninth inning rally. After Smalling led off the inning with a walk, Dustin Garneau laced a deep line drive just inside the left field foul line. Unfortunately for the Drillers, Travelers left fielder Zach Borenstein made a run-saving catch on the warning track, crashing full speed into the outfield wall.
Carpenter would not allow for any more potential scoring opportunities, as he struck out Tom Murphy and Brian Humphries to end the game.
Although Gray was credited with the loss, the Rockies top prospect seems to be finding his stride, going 11.2 innings while only allowing 1 run and striking out 13 in his last 2 starts.
The Drillers will close out the road trip Thursday night in Little Rock. 2011 first-round pick Tyler Anderson will start against Travelers right-hander Yeiper Castillo. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10.
