Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Trenton, NJ) April 21, 2014 - Four Trenton pitchers combined on a three-hitter against the Akron RubberDucks Monday night, as the Thunder claimed a 5-2 victory in the opening game of a four-game series at Arm and Hammer Park.
Lefty Jeremy Bleich (2-2), whom the RubberDucks beat last Wednesday at Canal Park, earned the win, tossing 5 1/3 innings, and allowing just a pair of singles and two unearned runs. Bleich walked two and struck out four. He retired the side in order three times.
Taylor Garrison retired all five hitters he faced, and Pat Venditte chipped in a scoreless eighth to bridge the gap to closer Diego Moreno. Moreno worked a scoreless ninth to post his fourth save, two of which have come against the RubberDucks (9-8).
Trenton (10-7) has won three out of four against Akron so far this season. Twice now they have held Akron to three hits in a game.
Cody Anderson (1-2) suffered the loss for Akron, going five innings, but allowing nine hits and four runs.
After the Thunder took a 1-0 lead in the first, the RubberDucks scored twice in the second, helped by a walk by Bleich and a double-error on third baseman Tyler Austin that allowed runners to reach second and third. Jordan Smith drove in the first run with a groundout, and Tyler Holt added a two-out RBI single to make it 2-1, Akron.
Anderson gave up a lead-off triple to Austin in the second. Rob Refsnyder drove in Austin with a groundout to tie the game 2-2. Trenton then broke through in the fifth, scoring two times on RBI singles by Rob Segedin and Austin. The Thunder added an insurance run in the sixth off reliever Jordan Cooper. Tyler Sturdevant tossed a scoreless eighth inning for Akron.
The RubberDucks will send RHP Joe Colon (0-2, 3.78) to the mound when they play game two of the series on Tuesday evening at 7:05. Trenton is expected to tab RHP Bryan Mitchell (1-2, 5.14) as its starter. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM in Akron and also via www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
