Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- Tacoma's walk-off win over Sacramento headlined a doubleheader split between the Rainiers and River Cats at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.
Infielder Leury Bonilla's late-inning heroics earned the Rainiers a 1-0 win in the first half of the double dip. Bonilla broke open a scoreless game with a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning that cleared the way for Ty Kelly to score the game-winning run.
Starting pitcher Jordan Pries starred for Tacoma from the mound in his Triple-A debut. Pries, who joined the Rainiers from Double-A Jackson on Saturday, limited Sacramento to one hit over 6.0 scoreless innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out two.
Relievers Lucas Luetge, Stephen Pryor and Clay Rapada combined to allow one hit and struck out five in 3.0 shutout frames. The left-hander Rapada (3-0) earned his team-leading third win of the season after tossing a perfect inning in the ninth.
The tables turned in the second game, with the River Cats rolling to an 8-3 win over Tacoma. RBI singles hit by Manny Pina and Cole Gillespie helped Tacoma pull ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning, but the lead lasted until the River Cats rang up three more runs in the top of the third.
Gillespie's solo home run hit in the bottom of that inning - the outfielder's team-leading fourth this season - served as the final time Tacoma would make an appearance onto the scoreboard on Sunday.
James Gillheeney (1-2) was dealt his second loss in his third start this season after surrendering four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. The left-hander struck out four and issued four walks.
The Rainiers (9-7) are set to host the third installment of the team's four-game series with Sacramento (11-7) at 6:05 p.m. tomorrow, April 21. Left-hander Anthony Fernandez (0-1, 3.77) is set to start for the Rainiers in the contest against River Cats right-hander Zach Neal (1-0, 3.00).
