Reign Rally But Fall 5-3 to Thunder

April 20, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL) - Ontario Reign News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (0-2-0), four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, fell to the Stockton Thunder (2-0-0) by a final score of 5-3 in Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals in Stockton on Saturday night.

The Thunder were first on the board at 7:29 as Riley Wetmore banged in a rebound from Matt Bergland. The shot cleared the glove of Jussi Olkinuora for the first of the night.

Early in the second period, Stockton took a two-goal lead with a quick deflection from the slot. The shot skidded across the crease and past the pads of Olkinuora off the stick of Andrew Clark. Jeremy Langlois began his scoring spree about four minutes later on the power play. Then, at 9:03, Langlois caught Olkinuora on his heels for the Thunder's fourth tally of the game.

Jake Newton got the Reign on the board with a beautiful goal. The defenseman carried the puck into the Thunder zone, used his body to shield it, and fired a quick shot top shelf past Brian Foster. Matt Register and Derek Couture had the assists. Moments later, Register earned his own goal when he launched a shot from the point straight through traffic cutting the Thunder lead to 4-2. Gasper Kopitar and Matt White earned the helpers.

While on the power play, the Thunder crept right into the Reign crease and hacked the puck past Olkinuora with 2:07 left in the second period taking a 5-2 lead. Langlois earned the Hat Trick with the goal.

In the final frame, the Reign crashed the net. With a number of bodies blocking the view of Foster, the puck found its way past the Stockton goaltender at 2:47. The goal was credited to Gasper Kopitar with assists to Cody Sol and Jeremy Yablonski.

Olkinuora suffered the loss with 27 saves; Foster earned his second win of the series with 16 saves.
