Eagles Drown the Steelheads 3-1 in Game 2

April 19, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL) - Colorado Eagles News Release

BOISE, Idh. - The Colorado Eagles (1-1) knocked off the Idaho Steelheads (1-1), 3-1, at CenturyLink Arena in Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. The Eagles victory tied the series at 1-1.

The first period saw no score for either team as both netminders held strong between the pipes. Idaho's Josh Robinson halted all 14 of Colorado's shots while Eagles goalie Dustin Butler shutdown all nine shots thrown on him.

Two and a half minutes into the second frame, Eagles defenseman Kevin Young scored the Eagles first power-play goal from just inside the blue line to give the Eagles their first lead of the series, 1-0. "It was really a weight lifted off all of our backs to get that first power-play goal. Just to get that ball rolling and get our confidence back was a really good thing," said Young. Just over five minutes later Colorado forward Trent Daavettila utilized his precision shooting with a backhanded shot that found the back of the net, top-shelf, to extend the Eagles lead 2-0. Daavettila expressed, "It wasn't really that hard of a shot, I just had a really good screen and was able to find that top corner," said Daavettila. With the Steelheads and Eagles skating 4-on-4, as defenseman Mark Nemec and Idaho forward Justin Mercier were sent to the penalty box, Idaho forward David de Kastrozza netted his third goal of the series to get the Steelheads on the board, 2-1, at the 9:24 mark of the second.

The Steelheads pulled Robinson to put an extra attacker on the ice but the Eagles held Idaho off for almost two minutes with the extra man. With only 11 seconds left in regulation Eagles defenseman Mark Nemec threw the puck out of Colorado's zone and it rolled into the net to pump the Eagles lead to 3-1. "I really just wanted to get it out of the zone but not get called for icing, so I was pretty happy that it went in that net," stated Nemec. Robinson made 33 saves on 35 shots while Dustin Butler stopped all but one of Idaho's 20 shots to secure the 3-1 victory.

"Winning on the road during the playoffs is crucial to being successful," expressed assistant coach Aaron Schneekloth. "The team gained a lot of confidence and coming home to the Budweiser Events Center, to the fans who support us year after year and have been there for us all season, will truly give us the home-ice advantage. We simply need to continue to work hard and play together to be effective."
