New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats fell to the Portland Sea Dogs by the score of 6-1 on Saturday evening at New Britain Stadium.

The visiting Sea Dogs continued to swing a hot bat collectively, stringing together three consecutive hits to begin the game. After 2B Mookie Betts led off with a single, CF Shannon Wilkerson doubled him home and was followed up by an RBI single from 3B Travis Shaw to give Portland a 2-0 lead.

With runners on first and second, 1B Stefan Welch poked a single out to centerfield to bring Betts all the way home from second and put the visitors up by three.

The Rock Cats would not be shutout however as C Matt Koch blasted his first Eastern League home run, a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh off of Portland reliever RHP Mike McCarthy.

Portland put up another three runs on Rock Cats reliever RHP Matt Summers, highlighted by a solo home run from Betts to lead off the ninth inning. Saturday marked the third straight game in which the Sea Dogs scored six runs against New Britain.

New Britain starter LHP Sean Gilmartin settled down after the first inning runs, striking out nine and tying a career high. He gave up three runs on seven hits in the losing effort (1-2).

Mike Augliera went six innings en route to his second win of the season (2-1). He allowed no runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two.

The Rock Cats will have a day off on Easter Sunday and then welcome the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays affiliate) for a four game series starting 6:35 p.m. Monday evening. New Britain sends LHP Pat Dean to the hill while New Hampshire's starter is still TBD.
