Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (4-11) vs. SALEM RED SOX (8-7)
RHP Mike Recchia (1-1, 6.48 ERA) vs. RHP Justin Haley (0-0, 4.50 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.)
SALEM FLIRTS WITH PERFECTION FRIDAY Red Sox starter Brian Johnson tossed six perfect innings in Salem's 8-2 victory over the Dash in Friday night's series opener at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem did not muster a base runner until Tim Anderson's single with one out in the seventh against reliever Dayan Diaz. The Dash did muster a tally in both the eighth (Nick Basto RBI triple) and ninth (Courtney Hawkins home run), but the Red Sox sent the Dash to their fifth consecutive loss.
RARE HOME STRUGGLES Since moving into BB&T Ballpark prior to the 2010 season, Winston-Salem boasts a home record of 173-116 (.599), which is fourth-best in all of full-season Minor League Baseball during that span. However, the Dash are in the midst of a four-game home losing streak, just the third such skid in the BB&T Ballpark era. Winston-Salem also dropped four home games in a row from May 18-21, 2011, while the longest home skid in the facility's five-season history was five games from August 6-16, 2013.
DON'T WANT THIS SIX PACK Winston-Salem's five-game overall losing streak dating back to Monday night at Wilmington is tied for the second-longest skid in the Dash era (2009-present). The worst losing streak took place from August 11-18, 2013, when Winston rattled off eight consecutive losses. The only other time the Dash have dropped five straight came from August 16-20, 2011.
HITTING FOR MORE THAN A DECADE Thanks to a late-game push, Winston-Salem avoided a no-hitter, which would have been the first against the club since July 3, 2003, when former Oriole and Met John Maine held the Warthogs hitless in Frederick's 3-0, seven-inning victory. The last time Winston was no-hit in a nine-inning game was April 14, 1995, when Wilmington's Jose Rosado and Pat Flury combined on a 3-0 win. This was the first season of the Warthogs nickname (replacing Spirits).
SNAPPING THE DROUGHT Thanks to Courtney Hawkins' solo blast in the ninth inning Friday, the Dash's 86-inning home run drought came to an end. Winston-Salem had not gone yard since the eighth inning of its 12-11 loss at Salem on April 8, which means the Dash played nine consecutive games without a long ball. Only Wilmington (3) has fewer home runs than Winston-Salem, and all four of the Dash's dingers belong to Hawkins. The last time a Dash hitter not named Hawkins went deep was in last season's finale at Wilmington (Jeremy Farrell, September 2, 2013).
'PEN PUNCHOUTS Winston-Salem's bullpen has collectively worked 54.1 innings thus far this season, and Dash relievers have fanned 73 batters, which is good for 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings. The bullpen has a 1.66 earned run average; however, when including unearned runs, the 'pen has given up 4.3 runs per nine frames.
WHERE'S THE (G)LOVE? With three more errors that resulted in three unearned runs Friday, the Dash have now made 31 errors and permitted 29 unearned runs thus far this season. Winston-Salem is tied with the Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A, San Diego) for the top spot in errors among all 120 Minor League Baseball teams, while their unearned run total is good for the highest in the Minors.
DASH DOTS With another strong outing Friday, southpaw Jarrett Casey has not surrendered a run in eight innings of work over six outings...Casey has scattered just five hits and whiffed 11 in those efforts...The White Sox announced that right-handed reliever Brandon Hardin has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Thursday...Winston-Salem has added southpaw Sean Hagan from Low-A Kannapolis...Hagan was 0-1 with a 2.35 earned run average in four relief efforts with the Intimidators before the promotion, his first to the High-A level.
