Being on the Road Isn't a Bad Thing

The Wheeling Nailers and South Carolina Stingrays opened their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series on Friday night, and for the fourth time in four Eastern Conference series in the ECHL, it was the road team who got the upper hand. Chaz Johnson and Christiaan Minella netted goals during the first period, before Mike Ratchuk tallied an insurance marker in the third, as the Nailers defeated the Stingrays, 3-0 at North Charleston Coliseum. Mike Condon was perfect on 23 shots, earning the shutout win, while Allen York suffered the loss with 30 saves.

First Ones Out of the Starting Blocks

Strong starts are imperative during the postseason, and on Friday night, the Nailers wasted little time in getting the upper hand in the game. In fact, it took Wheeling just 106 seconds (1:46) to open the scoring, as Chaz Johnson whipped in a shot from the right circle, off of a pass from Paul Cianfrini. Christiaan Minella also scored during the first frame, as the Nailers looked to reverse a trend that saw them get outscored by 12 goals in first periods during the regular season. Wheeling was 26-6-3 in the regular year, when tallying the first goal.

Amazing April Continues in the Crease

April born goaltender Mike Condon continued his remarkable month on Friday night, as he turned aside all 23 shots he faced, earning his fourth shutout of the month and seventh of the year (regular season + playoffs). The four April blankings come despite the fact that Condon has appeared in just five games. During that time, Mike has allowed one goal on 158 shots, giving him a 0.20 goals against average and a .994 save percentage. Friday night marked the seventh time in team history that the Nailers have pitched a postseason shutout, and the first time since April 18th, 2009 (exactly five years earlier), when Curtis Darling turned in a 41-save performance in a 6-0 win against the Cincinnati Cyclones at US Bank Arena.

Seven Up for Johnson

Forward Chaz Johnson has the most playoff experience on the Wheeling roster, as he entered the 2014 Kelly Cup Playoffs having appeared in six professional postseasons and 52 games. Thanks to his early goal on Friday night, Johnson has now scored at least one goal in all seven of his trips to the playoffs, as he has now accumulated 25 goals, 22 assists, and 47 points. Nine of those markers have come in his last 11 games, as the Montreal, QC native is in search of his first series win since 2009. Christiaan Minella scored his second goal in as many series on Friday, while Mike Ratchuk's marker gave him 20 points in 40 career postseason tilts.

A Trio at the Coliseum

Saturday night marks the sixth all-time playoff game between the Nailers and Stingrays, as well as the fourth at North Charleston Coliseum. Friday night's triumph gives Wheeling a 4-1 lead, which includes a 3-0 mark at South Carolina. On Saturday, the Nailers will be looking to duplicate the feat achieved by the 2010-11 squad, who won the first two games of their best-of-five series in North Charleston, en route to a 3-1 series victory, which was clinched at WesBanco Arena. In its history, Wheeling has won three postseason games in each of three different cities (Cincinnati, North Charleston, Reading), but has yet to win four playoff games in one road building.
