Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- The Rainiers split a doubleheader against Salt Lake at Cheney Stadium on Friday, solidifying a series win for Tacoma in the team's four-game series with the Bees.
Julio Morban, in his Triple-A debut, provided all the pop the Rainiers needed to squeak out a 2-1 win in Game 1. The outfielder scored the tying in the fourth inning and then hit a go-ahead single in the sixth that gave the Rainiers the edge. Morban went 3-for-3 with three singles in his first appearance since a promotion from Double-A Jackson on Thursday.
Starter Andrew Carraway steered the Rainiers from the mound en route to collecting his first win in his second start this season. The right-hander limited the Bees to one run on four hits through 6.0 innings. He struck out one without issuing a walk. Logan Bawcom collected his second save of 2014 after tossing a scoreless inning in the seventh.
Salt Lake spoiled the Rainiers hopes of a series sweep and stopped the club's season-high winning streak at six after posting a late rally in Game 2. Tacoma led 3-1 before surrendering four runs in the top of the seventh, headlined by the two-out, three-run double hit by Efren Navarro.
Jesus Montero collected his third home run of the season in the second game of the doubleheader, spearheading a three-run charge posted by the Rainiers in the second. Manny Pina and Ty Kelly accounted for the other two runs after each tallied RBI singles.
Reliever Carson Smith was dealt the loss after allowing all four runs on two hits over one-third of an inning of work in the seventh. Starter Chance Ruffin gave up one run on three hits over 3.2 innings, and walked two with three strikeouts.
The Rainiers (8-6) welcome the Sacramento River Cats to Cheney Stadium for a four-game series that begins tomorrow, April 19. Right-hander Jordan Pries (0-0, -.--) is expected to make his Triple-A with the Rainiers in the opener. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
