RubberDucks Storm Back for 7-6 Victory over Baysox

Akron RubberDucks News Release

(Bowie, MD) Tyler Naquin's perfect, one-hop throw to catcher Tony Wolters with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday retired Bowie's Sharlon Schoop to end the game and secure a 7-6 RubberDucks victory at Prince George's Stadium.

The pivotal play at the plate came after Buck Britton singled up the middle off Akron righthander Shawn Armstrong. With runners at first and second and two out, Britton lined a sharp single up the middle. The ball went bouncing toward Naquin who charged toward home plate, scooping up the ball and preparing for a throw home. Schoop rounded third as Naquin came up firing. Wolters made the catch and tagged Schoop, who slid in, feet first. Home plate umpire Roberto Moreno signaled "out," and the game was over.

The RubberDucks (8-7) came back from a 6-4 deficit with three runs in the seventh inning off Bowie reliever Ashur Tolliver (0-1) and Juan Morillo. Giovanny Urshela slapped an RBI single off Tolliver, who was making his Double-A debut. After Morillo entered the game, Jarrud Sabourin lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 6-6. One batter later, with Urshela at third and Bryson Myles on first, Myles took off for second. Hoping to catch Urshela off third, catcher Mike Ohlman threw toward third base, but misfired the ball into left field, allowing Urshela to score the go-ahead run.

The comeback made a winner of Akron starter Kyle Davies (1-1). Davies worked six innings and gave up six runs, five earned, on four hits. Bowie scored five off Davies in the third inning, including a three-run homer by Christian Walker, to take a 5-2 lead.

Jordan Smith blooped a two-run single to left off Jake Pettit in the fourth inning to make it 5-4. He was 2-4 on the night.

Francisco Lindor added three hits for Akron.

First baseman Jake Lowery left the game after being hit in the face with a pitch from Pettit in the fourth inning.

The RubberDucks will conclude the series against the Baysox (8-7) on Saturday afternoon at 2:05. RHP Gabriel Arias (1- 1, 2.00) will start for Akron, while RHP Matt Bischoff (1-1, 4.82) is the expected starter for Bowie. The game will be broadcast on WHLO NewsTalk 640 in Akron and also via www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
