Road Warriors Win Game One 2-1
April 18, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL) - Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Kalamazoo, MI: The Road Warriors pulled past Kalamazoo in Wings Stadium on Friday night by a score of 2-1 to give them a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.
Game one started off with heavy hits and several defensive plays. There was much neutral zone play and only a few goal scoring opportunities during the first period which neither team could convert on. Kalamazoo outshot the Road Warriors 9-7 through one period of play.
Marc-Olivier Vallerand began the scoring with a one-timer to beat Jordan Binnington with a feed coming from Andrew Rowe. During the period, Binnington saw 24 shots on net from Greenville's offense. Despite the plethora of shots, the score remained 1-0 in favor of Greenville.
Bretton Cameron found the back of the net for his first professional playoff goal 7:41 into the third period. The forward scored after a collision in front of Binnington who was unable to get in position to make the save. Vallerand and Sam Klassen assisted on the goal. Five minutes later, Kalamazoo's Yannick Veilleux scored with a blistering wrist shot that beat Jason Missiaen. It was his first professional playoff goal that hit a post and went into the net. The goal was assisted by Elgin Reid who kept the puck in the attacking zone during the constant pressure. Kalamazoo would pull the goaltender in the final minute to attempt to tie the game. Missiaen remained strong with the final minute saves and totaled 15 stops in the third period. His game total gave him 35 saves and the second star of the game. Vallerand was the game's first star with a goal and an assist.
