Five-Run Fourth Lifts 51s Past Aces

Reno, Nev.- On field, there wasn't much celebrating the five-year anniversary of Aces Ballpark. A five-run fourth inning was plenty for the Las Vegas 51s as they shutout the Aces, 6-0, Thursday night.

Reno starter Bo Schultz and Las Vegas starter Dana Eveland tore through the first two innings with no resistance.

Eveland ran into trouble in the third but wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam with no damage. An error by 51s first baseman Allan Dykstra filled the bases for Alfredo Marte, but Eveland got Marte to roll over to Dykstra to end the inning.

Schultz retired the 51s in order in the third but found trouble in the fourth. Daniel Muno and Eric Campbell started the inning with back-to-back singles. Shortstop Wilmer Flores came up and hit a deep drive to center field that landed on top of the center field wall. The ball bounced back on to the playing field and was ruled a three-run homer.

After Aces Manager Phil Nevin came out and talked with the umpires, the three-man crew ruled the ball hit the yellow line at the top of the wall and was in play. Flores was awarded a two-run double. The controversy didn't matter much as Dykstra followed with a booming home run to make it a 4-0 game. The 51s collected three more hits in the inning and extended their lead to 5-0.

Eveland picked up his first win of the year with five shutout innings. Schultz was charged with five earned runs and dropped to 1-2.

Off the field, the Aces treated all fans in attendance to free cupcakes after the fifth inning. 6,000 red, white and blue cupcakes were set up in the Aces script logo as Minor League Baseball's first ever cupcake mural.

The four-game series concludes Friday at Aces Ballpark. Reno will try to break a four-game skid with right-hander Alex Sanabia (0-1, 9.49). Las Vegas sends right-hander Rafael Montero (2-0, 2.60) who was ranked as the New York Mets number three prospect according to Baseball America entering 2014.
