Memphis Redbirds News Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Starting pitcher Hiram Burgos struck out a career-high 10 batters as the division-rival Nashville Sounds handed the Memphis Redbirds a 5-4 defeat on Thursday night at Greer Stadium.

Outfielder Randal Grichuk went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs while recording his team-leading eighth extra-base hit and third in his last three games. Second baseman Greg Garcia added three hits in the loss, while outfielder Stephen Piscotty hit his first Triple-A home run.

With its third one-run loss this season, Memphis (8-6) remains tied with Round Rock for first in the American Southern Division.

Burgos (1-2) struck out eight of the first 12 batters to open the game and was charged with three runs in five innings for the win.

The Sounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings, beginning with three consecutive singles to begin the game for their first run. In the next inning after a Taylor Green solo homer, former Redbird Eugenio Velez tacked on the Sounds' third run with an RBI single.

Piscotty's first Triple-A home run in the fourth put the Redbirds on the board, a solo shot landed just beneath the arm of the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left.

Velez's two-run double in the bottom of the frame extended the Nashville lead to 5-1.

Memphis got the two runs back in the next frame to cut the lead to 5-3. After Ed Easley was hit by a pitch and pinch hitter Tommy Pham walked, Grichuk lined a two-run double down the left field line.

Grichuk produced another RBI in the next inning to bring the Redbirds within one run at 5-4. With the bases loaded, Grichuk hit a single to left to score Easley from third, but Pham was tagged out at home attempting to score the tying run from second base.

Memphis threatened in the ninth by putting the tying-run in scoring position with singles on the first two pitches, but Donovan Hand retired the next three batters to convert his third save of the season and end the evening.

Memphis starter Scott McGregor allowed a season-high five runs on eight hits in four innings for the loss. Lee Stoppelman and Sam Freeman each struck out three over two scoreless frames.

The two Tennessee rivals conclude their series at 7:05 pm CT on Friday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Boone Whiting (0-1, 1.98) will take the mound for the Redbirds in the series finale against Nashville left-hander Brad Mills (1-0, 2.25).
