Knights Lose Thursday's Game 1-0 to Braves

(Uptown Charlotte, NC) - Gwinnett center fielder Todd Cunningham scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning and the Charlotte Knights dropped Thursday's game to the Gwinnett Braves by a score of 1-0 in front of a record crowd of 10,323 fans at BB&T Ballpark. It was the team's fourth sellout crowd of the season and it was the largest so far this year.

LHP Charlie Leesman (0-2, 1.62) started for Charlotte and allowed one unearned run on four hits over seven innings and was saddled with the loss. Leesman's only run came in the fourth inning when Tommy La Stella hit a ball to center fielder Gorkys Hernandez. With Cunningham on third base, Hernandez made the catch and fired the ball home. Cunningham slide into home plate and the ball knocked out of catcher Josh Phegley's glove. Cunningham was safe and it was the first and only run of the ballgame.

RHP Mitch Atkins (1-2, 5.40) allowed two hits over 4.2 innings for the victory. Atkins relieved starter Yunesky Maya, who exited the game in the second inning due to an injury. Maya allowed two hits over one full inning. Cunningham led the way for the Braves with three hits. He finished the night 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Both teams had five hits apiece in Thursday's game.

The Knights will conclude their eight-game homestand on Friday from BB&T Ballpark. RHP Scott Carroll (3-0, 0.00) gets the start for the Knights, while the Braves will hand the ball to LHP Mike Minor, who is on a Major League rehab assignment from Atlanta. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch of the three-game series finale against the Braves is set for 7:05 p.m. Pre-game radio coverage starts at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM and WRHI 1340 AM and 94.3 FM. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action.

The Knights are hosting a special Charlotte O's Tribute Night on Friday and the team will welcome more than 30 former O's players to BB&T Ballpark. The first 2,000 kids 12 and under will receive a Charlotte O's Replica jersey, thanks to Carolinas HealthCare System. After the game, the Knights will light-up-the-sky with post-game fireworks, courtesy of BB&T, 107.9 The Link, and News Talk 1110 WBT.
