Rochester Red Wings News Release

Pawtucket Red Sox (8-5) @ Rochester Red Wings (6-5) - Frontier Field, Rochester, NY

GAME 1: RHP Rubby De La Rosa (1-0, 0.84) vs. LHP Logan Darnell (0-0, 0.00)

GAME 2: LHP Chris Hernandez (0-1, 2.53) vs. RHP Yohan Pino (1-0, 1.08)

TODAY'S TWINBILL: The Red Wings, just 15 days into the 2014 season, will play their third doubleheader of the year today against the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston) with first pitch of Game One set for 1:05 p.m. After Pawtucket took Games One and Two of the series, the Red Wings will need a sweep of today's doubleheader to earn a split of the four-game set. The Wings (6-5; 3rd in IL North) are in the midst of a season-long, three-game losing streak after the club won six straight from April 8-12 which included two twinbill sweeps of Scranton/WB and Lehigh Valley. Meanwhile, the Paw Sox (8-5; 2nd in IL North) have won three games in a row after losing three of their previous four.

- Friday, the Wings begin an eight-game road trip beginning in Syracuse with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch from NBT Bank Stadium

- The Wings will be without INF/OF Eduardo Nunez Thursday as he was recalled (26th man) for Minnesota's twinbill vs. Toronto...After being acquired last week, Nunez was hitting .318 (7-for-22) with a HR and 3 RBI in 6 games with Rochester.

ON THE OFFENSIVE : The Red Wings maintained their league-best batting average Wednesday collecting 12 more hits to raise their team average to .312 (116-for-372) on the season -- 22 points higher than Indianapolis in 2nd and 33 points better than 3rd place Durham. The Wings are hitting even better with RISP posting a .316 (36-for-114) average including a .455 (5-for-11) mark with the bases loaded. Wings second-baseman James Beresford has led the way with RISP going 8-for-17 (.471) in those situations -- four more hits than any other Red Wing with RISP. The offense has been spread out throughout the lineup as five players with at least 20 AB on the season are hitting .318 or better (Beresford, Bernier, Farris, Nunez, Ramirez).

- Both James Beresford (.385, 8th) and Wilkin Ramirez (.382, 9th) rank in the top 10 in the IL in hitting.

CATCHING OFFENSE : One reason for the Red Wings' hot start offensively as been the play of their catchers Eric Fryer and Dan Rohlfing, who have provided plenty of punch behind the plate this season for Rochester. The duo has combined to hit .394 (13-for-33) with five runs scored, three doubles and 10 RBI in 10 games thus far this season. Combined, the catchers have at least one hit in 9 of 10 starts on the year. Fryer (6-for-17; 2B, 4 RBI) hit .215 with 5 homers and 31 RBI last season with the Red Wings while Rohlfing (7-for-16; 2 2B, 6 RBI) batted a combined .267 with 3 home runs and 42 RBI in 112 games between New Britain (AA) and Rochester.

- After 3 more hits and 2 RBI Wednesday, Rohlfing is now batting . 489 (22-45) w/ 3 2B, 3B, 2 HR & 13 RBI in 14 career games at Frontier Field...He also has a 5-game hit streak overall to start the 2014 season.

EARLY BIRDS: The Red Wings have scored early and often thus far in 2014. Through their first 10 games of the season, Rochester has scored 21 runs in the first two innings (32 from the 3rd inning on) while taking the first lead in seven of their 11 games -- going 5-2 in those contests. The Wings have scored in either the first or second inning in nine of their first 11 games of the year.

WINGS 'PEN: The Red Wings' bullpen has been a strong suit for the team this season. After posting five scoreless innings on Wednesday, the bullpen's ERA dropped to 2.98 (15 ER/ 45.1 IP) on the season. Over the last seven games, they've been even better posting a 2.03 ERA (6 ER/26.2 IP) -- five of the runs came against the Paw Sox in 3.2 IP on Monday. The bullpen has been relied upon nearly as much as the starters throwing 45.1 innings thus far compared to the 46,1 innings turned in by the starters. Southpaw Matt Hoffman (0 R in 3.2 IP) and right-hander Ryan Pressly (1 R in 6.2 IP) have thrown a combined 9.0 consecutive scoreless innings between the two of them.

2013 vs. PAWTUCKET: The Wings won their first season series over Pawtucket since 2009 (10-6) by going 9-7 against the Paw Sox in the 2013 regular season. However, the Paw Sox would knock off the Wings in five games in the first round of the Governors' Cup playoffs...it was the first time ever that Pawtucket beat Rochester in a playoff series (Rochester had won the previous 3 series)...after losing 6 of the first 8 games of the regular season against Pawtucket, the Wings won 7 of the last 8 games between the two clubs including a 4-game sweep of the Paw Sox, Jul. 4-7 at Frontier Field...it was Rochester's first 4-game sweep over Pawtucket since 1995...in that series, the Red Wings won back-to-back extra-inning, walk-off games on Jul. 5 and Jul. 6.

RAIN KINGS : The Wings were postponed for a fifth time in 13 games on Tuesday night and will play their 3rd doubleheader of the season today. The good news is that the Wings have swept both of their twinbills this season (SWB on 4/8 & LHV on 4/12), after not sweeping one in almost two years prior (5/5/12 vs. BUF). In 2013, the Wings played 5 doubleheaders, being swept in two (4/13 @ PAW & 5/11 vs. COL) and splitting three.
