Modesto Nuts News Release
Modesto, CA. - Jayson Aquino tossed five shutout innings in the Nuts 2-1 win on Wednesday night against the Visalia Rawhide at John Thurman Field.
To avoid a sweep, Aquino (W,1-2) was methodical and successful over five innings allowing just four hits, walking none and striking out one. He worked out of two jams. In the first, Aquino stranded a two-out single at third after a stolen base and an error. In the fifth, Aquino stranded two runners on base after allowing a pair of singles to begin the inning against the Rawhide (9-5).
In the first inning, the Nuts (3-11) scored an unearned tally against Hector Hernandez (L, 1-2) to give them an early lead they would not relinquish. David Kandilas led the first inning off with a single. He went to second on an errant pickoff throw by the pitcher Hernandez. The next hitter, Rosell Herrera, rolled an infield single up the middle. On the play, the second baseman Kevin Medrano threw the ball away and Kandilas came into score.
In the fifth, the Nuts added an important second tally. Derek Jones whacked a leadoff double and stole third base. Jones scored when Matt Wessinger bounced a RBI single into centerfield against a drawn-in infield.
Raul Fernandez (S, 2) notched his second save in as many opportunities. He did allow a leadoff walk to score, but with the two-run cushion, was able to finish off the Nuts victory.
The Nuts head to Lake Elsinore to take on the Storm on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Game one of the three-game set will feature righty Matt Flemer on the mound for the Nuts. The Storm will have righty Bryan Rodriguez throwing. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m.
