Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa ( April 16, 2014 ) - Designated hitter Chase McDonald lined a two-out RBI single to right field that scored right fielder James Ramsay in the bottom of the 11 th inning to back up a guaranteed win for the Quad Cities River Bandits by a 3-2 final and second straight walk-off victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Modern Woodmen Park Wednesday night.

In a 2-2 tie, Whitecaps right-hander Julio Felix started the bottom of the 11 th inning by allowing Ramsay's leadoff single that broke up 6 1/3 hitless innings by West Michigan pitchers. Center fielder Brett Phillips put down a sacrifice, and shortstop Jack Mayfield drew an intentional walk. After first baseman Conrad Gregor struck out with runners at first and second, McDonald slapped the first pitch he saw from Felix to right field for his third hit and his team's second walk-off RBI single in as many nights against Felix.

Until the 11 th inning, West Michigan's bullpen stifled the River Bandits (7-6). Right-handers Will LaMarche and Montreal Robertson each tossed two hitless innings following starter Chad Green. The right-hander Green went six innings in which he allowed two earned runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Quad Cities had two hits in the second through 10 th innings and none from the fifth through 10 th .

McDonald's hit earned right-hander Zach Morton (1-0) the win after the latter escaped trouble in the top of the 11 th inning. Whitecaps right fielder Ben Verlander hit a leadoff single for his fourth hit and went to second on Morton's wild pickoff throw. After a walk, Morton escaped trouble with a strikeout, fielder's choice, and foul popup. The Whitecaps left 10 runners on base in the game.

Quad Cities scored in the first inning against Green. Shortstop Jack Mayfield lined a two-out double down the right-field line and scored when first baseman Conrad Gregor chopped a single into center field. Gregor advanced to second on the throw home and went to third on a single by McDonald. Catcher Brian Holberton grounded a ball off Green's glove for an infield single to score Gregor for a 2-0 lead.

Right-hander Michael Feliz kept the Whitecaps (7-6) scoreless for the first four innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out four batters. He walked one batter in the first and two in the second before lone singles in the third and fourth innings.

With a 2-0 lead, River Bandits left-hander Evan Grills started the fifth inning and retired the first four batters he faced. In the sixth, he allowed three consecutive one-out hits, as Whitecaps left fielder Raph Rhymes hit an infield single, first baseman Dominic Ficociello singled, and Verlander slapped a game-tying, two-run double down the right-field line. After a fielder's choice, Verlander went to third base, but on a ground ball, third baseman Austin Elkins threw home to Holberton to tag out Verlander.

Grills lasted 3 2/3 innings, but allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases in the eighth inning. Right-hander Tyler Brunnemann entered to strike out shortstop Willy Adames to end the threat. Brunnemann also worked around a leadoff walk to designated hitter Harold Castro in the ninth inning by picking off Castro between second and third base. Brunnemann completed 2 1/3 hitless innings.
