Kernels Fall to South Bend

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels lost their first series of the year as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the South Bend Silver Hawks Wednesday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The game was scoreless through three innings as Kernel starter Ethan Mildren and South Bend's Adam Miller overpowered hitters in their first trip through the opposing teams' orders. Miller exited the game after three innings after fielding a ground ball hit back to the pitcher. In his three innings Miller allowed just a second-inning single to Joel Licon while striking out four Kernels.
In the fourth inning the Silver Hawks scored the opening run of the game on an RBI single from Daniel Palka, which scored Stryker Trahan, who had reached on a leadoff double. The Kernels have now given up the first run in each of their seven home games.
South Bend extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning when Silver Hawk leadoff hitter Andrew Velazquez hit a home run to left center field to begin the inning. Velazquez's solo shot was his first of the season.
In his first start of the season Mildren surrendered two runs on six hits, recording five strikeouts without a walk. Mildren was charged with the loss.
The Kernels trimmed the South Bend lead back to one run in the bottom half of the fifth with two outs. Jason Kanzler drilled a triple to the gap in right field. On the next pitch, Logan Wade hit a single through the right side to score Kanzler.
The top of the sixth inning saw the Silver Hawks claim a 4-1 lead. Jamie Westbrook reached on an infield single. Trahan then continued a solid series with a two-run home run to left field, his second of the season.
However, the Kernels would answer in the bottom of the seventh inning. Engelb Vielma began the inning with a double to the gap, his first two-bagger of the season. Consecutive groundouts by Jeremias Pineda and Jason Kanzler scored Vielma to bring the South Bend lead down to two runs.
The winning pitcher for the Silver Hawks was Blayne Weller, who tossed four innings in relief of Miller. Weller allowed the two runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
The Kernels put the tying run on base in the bottom of the eighth inning with runners on first and third with two outs. However, South Bend reliever Daniel Gibson was able to strike out Joel Licon to end the inning.
Johnny Omahen earned the save for the Silver Hawks, allowing just one base runner in the ninth inning.
The Kernels open up a three-game series v.
