RedHawks Bullpen Comes up Big, Top Sky Sox, 8-6
April 16, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Despite a six-run third inning by the Sky Sox (5-8), the RedHawk pitching staff buckled down to hold the Sox to just one hit over the final six and a third innings to pick up their second consecutive win Wednesday at Security Service Field, 8-6.
Although OKC (10-4) struck first in the game, the Sky Sox erupted for six runs in the third thanks to five extra-base hits, including a solo homer by 3B Ryan Wheeler, his first of the season. CF Jason Pridie recorded his first triple of the year, while 2B Drew Garcia, 1B Ben Paulsen and SS Charlie Culberson all smacked doubles off starting pitcher RHP Jake Buchanan.
Coming in relief for Buchanan, RHP Jose Cisnero sat down the next nine batters in order, recording six strikeouts in three innings.
Trailing 6-2, the RedHawks came up big in RHP Christian Bergman's final inning drawing a walk and recording four singles to score four runs to tie the ball game. In the seventh, off RHP Dan Houston (0-1), C Max Stassi led off with a double and was driven in on a two-run shot in the next at-bat by 1B Jon Singleton.
Paulsen would hit his second double of the game in the bottom of the seventh, but righties Jason Stoffel and Josh Zeid continued the strong relief pitching for OKC and had 1-2-3 eighth and ninth innings to close the door on a Sox comeback. Zeid picked up his second save of the season. He also had one in Tuesday's affair.
Both teams will be back at it tomorrow when LHP Tyler Matzek (1-0, 5.00 ERA) will square off against former-Sky Sox Collin McHugh (0-0, 6.00 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
