Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads and Kannapolis Intimidators matched up for a wild, error filed, 12-inning rubber match Wednesday afternoon, that saw the lone 'Dads miscue come back to hurt them in the 12th as Hickory fell to Kannapolis 4-3 in front of 3,333 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The two teams entered the 12th inning with the game tied at 3-3 ever since the Crawdads were able to muster an unearned run in the 8th. Both teams had opportunities to win during the preceding frames, but both bullpens had held the line. Eventually, it was an error by Hickory third baseman Juremi Profar to start the 12th that allowed Adam Engel to reach for the Intimidators and score the go-ahead run on an RBI by Danny Hayes.
The 'Dads were nearly able to pull the same feat in the bottom of the inning when Kannapolis second baseman Tyler Shryock committed back-back-errors with two outs to put runners at the corners for Nick Vickerson, but Vick popped out to the catcher to end the three hour and thirty five minute game with a 4-3 loss.
The Crawdads fell behind early contest, when starting pitcher Akeem Bostick allowed a solo home run to Intimidators right fielder Jacob Morris in the 1st and a 2-run long ball to DH Tyler Williams in the 5th to make the score 3-0 Intimidators.
The 'Dads then took advantage of the first of Shryock's four total miscues to rally for a pair of unearned runs in the 6th, with Profar delivering a 2-out, 2- RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Hickory completed the comeback in the 8th, when yet another Shryock error allowed Lewis Brinson to reach and eventually score on an RBI fly out by Jairo Beras to tie the game at 3-3 and set the stage for the extra inning drama.
Brinson finished the contest 2-4 with a run scored, extending his team-high hitting streak to seven games.
Hickory reliever Abel De Los Santos (0-1) took the tough loss for the 'Dads, allowing just the unearned run in the 12th over his two innings pitched. Kannapolis closer Jake Sanchez (1-0) earned the win with three perfect innings out of the bullpen, complete with 4 Ks.
Combined, the Crawdads bullpen of Tyler Smith, Cody Kendall and De Los Santos tossed eight innings and allowed only one unearned run on six hits, three walks and 13 strikeouts.
With the loss the Crawdads (6-8) drop two of three to the Intimidators (6-8) in the series. The 'Dads will try to bounce back on the road on Thursday when they start a 3-game series in Asheville against the Tourists. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
