Elmira Jackals Become ECHL Affiliate of Buffalo Sabres
April 16, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL) - Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - April 16, 2014 - The Elmira Jackals announced today, in conjunction with the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres, that they have entered into an agreement to become the ECHL affiliate of the Sabres effective immediately.
The Elmira Jackals are now the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres.
"This is a landmark day for the Elmira Jackals. We're excited about developing a strategic partnership that integrates all of the resources that both the Sabres and Jackals have to offer. The relationship with Buffalo is going to ensure that the Jackals put a competitive team on the ice season after season, and continue to bring family-friendly entertainment to the Twin Tiers.
One of 30 member clubs in the National Hockey League (NHL), the Buffalo Sabres are a professional ice hockey organization located in Buffalo, N.Y. Founded in 1970, the team plays host to nearly one million fans every year at its home arena, First Niagara Center, in downtown Buffalo and is one of the most visible and most successful sports entities in Western New York and Southern Ontario. Owned by Terry and Kim Pegula, the Sabres are also the parent company of its American Hockey League affiliate the Rochester Americans, and also the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League.
"Proper development is essential in maintaining a competitive roster at the NHL level," said Sabres general manager Tim Murray. "Having Elmira as an additional source to develop our young talent will certainly help our entire organization going forward. We're proud to have the Jackals as part of our organization and, with the Amerks in Rochester, we now have the added bonus of working with minor-league affiliates that are no further than 150 miles from Buffalo."
Since the Jackals joined the ECHL in 2007, 10 of their alumni have suited up in the NHL including, most recently, Mike Hoffman who debuted with the Ottawa Senators in 2013.
Said Tom Santulli, Chemung County Executive, "This is great news for Jackals fans in Chemung County and the entire region. The Buffalo Sabres is a strong organization with a large fan base in our community which will only increase with this new affiliation. We are very excited to a part of the Sabres organization as they begin to rebuild their championship franchise."
