Sacramento River Cats News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After trailing 3-0 after the second inning, the Sacramento River Cats stormed back, outscoring the Fresno Grizzlies 7-1 for the rest of the game to earn their fifth-consecutive victory with a 7-4 win over Fresno at Raley Field on Tuesday night.
Tossing six innings and allowing just three runs-two earned- on five hits and two walks and three strikeouts was River Cats starter Sean Murphy (2-1, 5.06 ERA). After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Murphy settled down, keeping Fresno off of the scoreboard to earn his second win of the season. Taking the loss on Tuesday night was Grizzlies lefty Edwin Escobar (0-1, 8.53 ERA), only completing four innings of work, yielding seven hits, six runs-five earned- walking one and striking out six River Cats.
A fast start for Fresno put them up 3-0 after the first two innings in the game. Grizzlies center fielder Gary Brown led-off the game with a walk and a stolen base. With runners on the corners and one out, Brown scored from third base on a passed-ball by catcher Ryan Ortiz. Fresno catcher Andrew Susac doubled home a run later in the inning, and shortstop Ydwin Villegas had an RBI single in the top of the second to give the Grizzlies the early three-run lead.
As they have so far this season, the River Cats responded with runs of their own in the following inning. Shortstop Tyler Ladendorf led off the bottom of the third inning with a double to right field. Center fielder Shane Peterson followed with a single to move Ladendorf to third, and with two outs first baseman Nate Freiman laced an RBI single off Fresno starter Escobar to cut the Grizzlies lead to 3-1.
Designated hitter Alden Carrithers drew a walk to load the bases for right fielder Kent Matthes. Escobar unleashed a wild pitching, scoring Peterson from third and moving the runners to second and third. Matthes took advantage of Escobar's miscue, driving in Freiman and Carrithers with a single up the middle to give Sacramento a 4-3 lead.
Sacramento added two runs in the fifth, scoring one on Grizzlies reliever Adam Reifers' balk that allowed Freiman to trot home from third. Ladendorf brought home the second run of the frame, drawing a bases-loaded walk off Reifer.
Matthes drove in his third run of the evening in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single scoring left fielder Michael Taylor to extend the River Cats lead to 7-3. The River Cats left fielder finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBI and a highlight-reel catch, robbing Grizzlies right fielder Tyler Colvin of an extra-base hit in the top of the sixth.
RHP Jose Flores ran into some trouble in the seventh inning, but worked out of it, only allowing one run after loading the bases with no outs. All three Fresno hitters struck out against reliever Evan Scribner in the eighth and he pitched a scoreless ninth frame to earn his second save of 2014.
RHP Zachary Neal (0-0, No ERA) makes his first start for the River Cats against Grizzlies RHP Jason Berken (1-0, 3.60 ERA) in tomorrow's matinee on Miller Lite Thirsty Thursday, starting at 12:05 p.m. at Raley Field. *** River Cats Season Tickets, Mini-Plans, and Flex Plans can be purchased for the 2014 season by calling the River Cats Ticket Hotline at (916) 371-HITS (4487).
